Danae: Daddy... would you be mad if I flooded the basement to make an indoor swimming pool? Joe: Um... yes. Danae: Ahh... so then you must be eternally grateful that I didn't do it! Joe: Uhh... what? Danae: You're welcome. Joe: What was that all about? Kate: Wait for it... Danae: So now you owe me... big time!

Dracip - I only read the paper to do the Sudoku and Crossword, I read the ‘news’ on my PDA with PocketExpress

If he has to pay Danae for every evil scheme she comes up with that she DOESN’T carry out, he’ll be broke in a week…

So the dad doesn’t even have enough backbone to teach his daughter that racketeering could land her in Federal down the road?

Who should I make that check out to, again?

@Joe; All services have the Good Conduct Medal/Ribbon. In the Marines, we called it, and National Service, “the Firewatch Ribbons”; if you could stay out of Serious Trouble for four years, you got one, or a little star to put on it, but there was usually no ceremony, since the awarder would be laughed out of the messhall. My old Dad the MSgt had so many stars on his, the middle one was silver (31 years all told, ‘34-‘66.)
Back to the Point: Good intentions DO count, but the Road To Hell is also paved with them. It takes a lot of follow-through to finish the job (just like the alligators, swamps, and drainage story.)

That book (and its successors “Starpilot’s Grave” and “By Honor Betray’d”) are some of my favorites, and I immediately thought of that passage when the Good Conduct Medal was first mentioned. As I recall, a ceremony in which one received it implied not only surprise on the part of your commanding officer, but was somewhat of an insult to the “honoree”, as well.

By the time I got through the comments, I forgot what strip I was reading and had to go back to the beginning. BTW, how old are the girls and which one is older? Or are they twins with one being the “evil” twin?
pbarnrob about 15 years ago
I have to wonder if they are step-sisters, they are so different in so many ways…
SaraCVT about 15 years ago
marvee,
When you asked that question, the first thing that popped into my head was “What? My girls?” See, I have twins, too…and I never thought about it, before, but they could be these two. Come to think of it, I have often said that Danae reminds me of Olivia. Mine are 6, almost 7, and my husband and I have said from the beginning, not entirely in jest, that Olivia will grow up to be world dictator and Madeline will be her henchman. Oh, what have I unleashed upon the world….
And, no, they don’t have to be step-sisters. Twins, or even regular siblings, are often diametrically different. I know that from experience.

”He’s reading a newspaper? Do people still do that?”
What’s a ‘newspaper’ granddad? How do you operate one?
The only news shows I watch on TV are The Daily Show and The Colber Repor so I can find what’s worth knowing about or what’s worthless worth knowing about — hero who runs back into burning building to look for anyone still trapped inside gets tased by police after he comes back out because he’s hopping around all excited and stuttering from adrenaline maybe d’ya think officer? — and then I look up the details of any stories I want to follow up on in my newspaper’s search thingy
Contrariwise, I’ll buy an amazon kindle only after I die arrive in Hades receive my greeting from that Master of Suave conciergity Satan find that all my precious books I’ve smuggled in have burned to a crisp and The Prince says hey, not to worry – we have free wi-fi
