Had a 60 “bug” when I was stationed in Germany in the early seventies. No gas gauge. Just a liter back up tank that you could throw a switch under the dash for and you could make it to a gas station where gas was expensive even then.
We had ration coupons that allowed up to buy gas a lot cheaper than the locals. They hated that but liked it if we could buy them cheap tax free booze at the GI class 6 (liquor) store
