Dear Diary, today I found a dolls arm in the street. I picked it up cause I felt sorry for it but then I threw it away cause it weirded me out. AK!!! So today is father's day and as always I wonder what it would be like if my dad was there. how would he dress? What does he smell like? Not like cheap underarm deodorant I hope. Gross! Would we go to ballgames? Would we be cheering for the Phillies? would he teach me about sawing wood and war movies and cars and mulch and things boys like? And if he was here would mom spend more time with me and tell me about girlie things and stuff she doesn't have time for now? I love my life with mom, but every father's day I always wonder....not so much about the dad I could've had, but the me I might have been. Heart

I think he does this strip each Father’s Day, but it still is just as emotional every year.

I don’t think it’s about single moms. It’s about children.

It is about children and the effect w as parents have on our children. Mark has beautifully captured the struggle we all feel to raise our children whether as a partner or a single parent. Thank-you Mark.

Yep. That should guilt trip every divorced dad out there. Both those who deserve it and those who don’t.
Good job!

There are too many children in this world today with only a single parent. Sad!

Excellent! (Heart’s single mother needs to meet Lio’s single father.)

I, too, was brought to tears by this strip. I never knew my birth father, (died when I was about 6 months old) and my stepfather was good to me. But I know that the men were very different and do wonder who I might have been.

Heart’s dad is among the living, but he took off for Hollywood (I believe). He and Addy met when they were both struggling actors (again, that’s what I recall).
Addy gave up her dreams of being a Star for the realities of being a Mom, but dear old Dad jumped the other way.

I found this strip to be touching

I can understand why Mark reruns this one every Father’s Day. There’s no way he could possibly top it.

I didn’t recognize this as a repeat, so checked the archive. I had to go back to 2003 before I found this strip repeated — not exactly “repeated every year!”

I never ever met Heart’s Father before in comic strips.

I chocked up on this one also. There was an arc where Heart went to N.Y. to meet her father, who was acting in a play, but I think he left before she got there.

Why is mom reading Heart’s private diary??
dwjensen over 13 years ago
dalbino83, it’s a little different than if Heart were 16.

We were staying with our grandkids while our son and his wife were off on a little vacation, when I saw this. It still brings tears to my eyes. If it takes a village to raise a child, has our village failed? Can we, as a village, do better?

Reading your child’s “privit” diary… almost never a good idea. This is one of the cases where it is.
