After a heavy rain my paved driveway is often covered with earthworms trying to escape the waterlogged earth. But they get stranded on the pavement and can’t get back to where they belong.
So I go out and pick them up and find a welcoming place for them and put them back where they can live out their little lives.
After all, the reason they find themselves stranded and dying on the pavement is because I decided to put pavement in. So I feel a sense of responsibility.
You haven’t lived until you have a handful of wiggly worms trying to escape between your fingers. Then too, after you deposit them in safety, you have a residue of worm “castings” all over your hand. That’s OK. I feel like I did a good deed.

Just raining cats and dogs sounds so mundane, but raining earthworms provides such great visual imagery!

It must have been really something when it was raining men for the Pointer Sisters.

Puppybreath is someone after my own heart. I always do the same when I’m digging to plant a bush, etc. We need these little critters.

The only thing worse than raining cats and dogs is hailing taxicabs.
