IrishCook, my first visit happened to be on the anniversary of JFK’s death. It’s an amazing place… Americans buried there are varied, from a Wiccan to a president to Lee Marvin.
Hmmm, maybe that place is the real America?
Reminds me of the story about when
they found a letter from a finance co. in the pocket of a dead Marine
on Iwo Jima. Seems the Marine had gotten behind in his payments. The
finance co. said, to the effect, that
“…if you don’t catch up on your payments we will be forced to write to your Commanding Officer about it and you will be in big trouble then…”
In ‘93 went to “The Wall” and knew too many, couldn’t go to Arlington. Last year a good friend lost in Iraq was placed in Arlington. Every memorial day reminds me how short our memory is on when it is truly necessary to go to war.
I’m not a US citizen, but in our parish cemeteries, you see a few tombstones, all the same model, with a maple leaf on it.
When I was in Moncton, I lived near the Elmwood cemetery http://www.elmwoodcemetery.net/index.html. There is a spot there whith about a dozen tombstones from the royal canadian forces, all straight and pointing in the same direction, with a canadian flag in the middle. You see tombstones of veterans from WWI to the first Gulf War.

It is humbling and makes you more aware of what your freedoms cost.
