Dypak said (yesterday), Anyone read Nancy and Sluggo? It’s another oldie. I think they’ve got new artists, there a nice change in it. It still has an old fashioned feel to it, yet manages to keep a new perspective. They make some pretty good music jokes too.
I’ve met Guy Gilchrist, at a comic shop appearance. Very nice man, good to the kids. I just noticed www.guygilchristmusic.com written on the Nancy strips. This guy’s a good musician, too!
“Corky’s Diner, Hope speaking. Oh, hi, Gertie! Corky & the crew are at the diner convention, so Eve and I are filling in while they’re away. Excuse me for a sec…. Eve, get down from there!”
Now this is getting exciting again. I can’t wait for the next day. And THANK YOU Jim S for bringing Byrd back. He has been greatly missed. Even NotNorman as well with his comments. Maybe Byrd will be a regular on GA…..sure hope so.
Okay, so I get that Dick Moores added a bunch of characters when he took over the strip and probably there were longtime readers who were upset that “newcomers” like Slim and Joel and Melba took over. And really, I like some of Scancarelli’s characters, like Gertie and Earl. But I would like to see some of that Skeezix and Walt stuff, especially since it can’t last forever.
I don’t mind new characters but lately the focus has been solely on new characters (Byrd, Upton, now Byrd again).
It would be nice to see some stories about the older characters like Walt, Skeezix and Corky.
I am also wondering if this is Gertie’s dream happening as she sleeps in front of the TV. Either way, I am enjoying this story, but, I too, miss the old characters.
Gertie is a nurse and is Walt Wallet’s live-in home health care provider.

Why do you constantly feel the need to explain the most obvious points of this strip?
It’s extremely annoying.

Yep, remember she did cry when he left.

Gertie was about to accept his proposal back then, I think, but when she went to the diner he was gone.
I always love to hear Byrd play.

“I hear singing but there’s no one there, I smell blossoms but the trees are bare…”
(Hey, if we can’t be entertained by our own imagination, what good is it to have one?)
((Bonus points for anyone who doesn’t have to Google the obscure song lyrics to recognize them…))

Susan, who broke whose heart? Gertie’s the one that turned Earl down.
Hoomi, I wonder why?

I think Byrd called Gertie “Angel Eyes” when he was in Gasoline Alley. Can Gertie claim royalties on the song?
axe-grinder about 15 years ago
Maybe Conan and Earl are both dead, and/or dreaming that Gertie is watching them!
I think Lee Oskar is the harmonica player who sounds closest in style to Earl Lee Byrd.

I hear Norman breathing, as he lies in the weeds, and pretends not to look.
