Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce for June 30, 2011
Transcript:
Looks like you didn't get a hundred on the final, Einstein! A 99? Mrs. Godfrey, why did I get a 99 on the final? I got everything right! You didn't write your name in the space provided. That's an automatic one-point deduction. Oh, how I hate her. Want to see what a real hundred looks like?

I used to think that Ms. Godfrey was a good teacher that Big Nate didn’t understand—but NO! She is what she is. I had a teacher like her in 7th grade (he only lasted a year). He made us write a term paper for science class & I wrote one on how vacuum tubes work (yes, it was a LOOONG time ago! I only got a C because I didn’t follow his margin instructions. Under him I actually flunked one semester of science, and a year later, at 8th grade graduation, I got the science award! And yeah, if Gina doesn’t change, Nate will outshine her as an adult (Unless they get married!).

So Nate got all the hard parts right but messed up on the easy stuff. I see a future in engineering for him…Once he gets out of sixth grade.

YEP MRS. GODFREY DIFFENTLY OUT TO GET NATE LOL!
Bosn_c_otter over 13 years ago
For the longest time I just figured Mrs Godfrey to be a tough but normal teacher….. Nate is right, she is a B#$%#
Possum Pete over 13 years ago
What a great teacher. The kid finally does something good and you take a dump on him. Luckily most teachers have an ounce of common sense, compassion, and humanity – not like this BIOTCH.
MRC112 over 13 years ago
That one is well out of order. Nate should be rewarded for pulling of such an incredible feat but instead gets penalised for such a silly mistake which is not part of the test iteself. For once I feel really sorry for Nate

Maybe SPG can get a job as the Ice Cream truck guy this summer? As for Nate’s flubb, I know whom isn’t going to be giving a good teacher’s present this year!!!

Yes! I nailed it yesterday! This is the greatest day of my life!
Wow, that’s pretty depressing.

Maybe tomorrow she’ll reconsider. That would be nice for him to get a break once. But probably not, too bad.

Like I said in a previous strip comment, “I WAS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE!!!!”
jadelovesjelly over 13 years ago
Well, maybe Mrs. Godfrey will realize how hard Nate tried, and give him a B for the semester, anyway.
jadelovesjelly over 13 years ago
And of course, Gina gets 100. I remember on my Social Studies final I got like a 96 or something.
Sundoulos over 13 years ago
I knew someone who was a lot like Gina in college; and I still run into her around town, occassionally. She doesn’t strike me as an especially happy person these days.

Know it’s a comic about a perpetual loser, but man this sends a wrong message about hard work and the result of it. Could have let him win one. The little blonde b___ needed to lose one. Get a clue!
burleigh2 over 13 years ago
That’s weird… I said the same thing yesterday, but my comment is gone. Weird… but yeah, I figured it would be something easy when he got all the hard stuff right. ;-)
littlejeff over 13 years ago
Mrs. G. still has an opportunity to show compassion by giving Nate a “B” for the overall class grade, though. One mistake is still one mistake; he didn’t earn a 100.
Tue Elung-Jensen over 13 years ago
Really cant blame Nate for not being awfully fond of school with a non supportive teacher like that. Any real life parent would complain to the board about her doing that crap (and what kind of nitty gritty ¤%#¤%#¤ teacher would bother about that if a kid who usually does crap actually bothers to read up and do good for once).
bignate creator over 13 years ago
Because the strip is funnier if Mrs. Godfrey is an extreme personality. If she were a reasonable person, it would be a lot tougher to write good gags. I always tell people: remember, it’s a comic strip. The different personalities on display, whether Mrs. Godfrey, Nate, Artur, Gina, etc., are exaggerated. That’s why Mrs. Godfrey is so horrible.
Sundoulos over 13 years ago
It was pretty standard for my teachers to deduct points for not including your name on a test. In fact, it was usually in the range of 2 – 5 points; it just seems more horrible because Nate needed that 100.
The real lesson Nate SHOULD be getting is that if he actually applied himself a little more, that one little point wouldn’t make such a difference in his average.
You never know, Mrs. Godfrey might still curve Nate’s average based on his performance on the last test; it’s doubtful, but possible. I, for one, am just grateful she didn’t suspect him of cheating; that alone tells me that she knows Nate has the potential to be a capable student.

The morals of the story: Set goals for yourself so you know how much of a failure you are.No matter how much hard work you do, somebody’s always out there to screw you no matter what.Have the good fortune to be born a girl. Everything goes your way and everybody bends over backwards to make sure you succeed at anything you want to do because they think you are incapable of doing it on your own.Nate’s not getting a B. When has Ms. Godfrey ever cut Nate any slack? He’s not her pet, Gina is. Nate’s getting held back again and this whole dance is going to start again and Nate is going to be even more of a loser than last time.
Creature950 over 13 years ago
What do you expect? With a teacher like Mrs. Godfrey, Nate will never get a hundred! Although Mrs. Godfrey has occasionally showed kindness.

At least Nate won’t go to summer school that’s good news but the bad news is he didn’t get a 100.

You rubbed that in Nate’s face and your going to regret that Gina!

I don’t see why everybody’s dumping on Mrs. Godfrey over the difference between a 99 and a 100. He left off his name, he loses a point. As she said, it’s “automatic.”
Nate’s concern on this test (as it played out) wasn’t to learn the material, or to pass the test, or to raise his grade. It was to get a 100, and to gloat over it. He got cocky, and he got sloppy, and unless Mrs. Godfrey KNEW that anything other than 100 would be a “FAIL” for Nate and marked him down for something she wouldn’t have marked another student down for, she’s not targeting him. Yesterday, she DID say “Excellent work, Nate”, and I think she was sincere. If Nate is going to blame ANYBODY for his humiliation, it can only be himself. (Well, he could blame Lincoln Peirce, I suppose…)

Well I had to join GoComics to get in on BigNate. A 99! What a burn. I’d open a can of spinach and a big can of whoopa** on Mrs. Godfrey! Why? Because I’m Popeye, that’s why!Love having Lincoln Peirce joining in on the fun. See you in the funny papers!

Popeyesforearm over 13 years ago
Geeze, get a grip people. It a comic. Lincoln does a great job with the protagonist Nate and all the antagonists in his world. That’s what makes it a “funny”. School Picture Guy really creeped me out at first but now I look forward to his socially ineptness and creep-a-tude. Look forward to his next appearance.

She reminds us of a teacher whom we will ove to hate during our school days.

I take Mrs. Godfrey’s side here, as usual. I actually see her as pretty reasonable and Nate’s complaining as baseless, and that’s what makes Big Nate work well for me. This is one of the rare strips where I laugh because I root against the protagonist. As far as this one was concerned, I was glad to see Nate fall short, because as another poster said, he didn’t want the 100 for the right reasons. He actually wasn’t even going to try for a 100. The only reason he wanted it was because Gina didn’t think he could do it, and he badly wanted to gloat in her face. I’m pleased he didn’t get that chance.
smcmanus over 13 years ago
That teacher is very disturbing. That is certianly no way to help children advance to the best of their ability. Maybe she could get away with treating people like that years ago but today there’s probably a way she could be reprimanded. A GOOD teacher is something we all usually remember. UnfortuNATEly, a BAD teacher is someone we also remember! (Hey Nate, get that picture guy to make her trip in the hallway and twist her ankle or something!)

Get lost, Gina. Preferably somewhere near a hole roughly 10 feet in diameter and a minimum of 50 feet deep, which should cause life threatening injuries without resulting in immediate death. Then, you’ll lay there, a rotting pile of flesh, clinging to the grades you so desperately strived for, but they’ll provide no help now. A fitting end to Gina; dying in a hole because she’s a hole.

Everyone is really overreacting here, Mrs.Godfrey didnt do anything wrong. nate was just studying to show off basically, and its an automatic deduction. He should remember to just write his name, its incredibly simple

Gina has no right to be so smug. She knows, I mean actually knows, he would have gotten a 100 if not for this mistake. Maybe it’s a really boneheaded mistake but it happens to everyone sometimes.

I get what Peirce is saying. Counter point: nate barely wins. He deserved to this time. This isn’t funny. It’s mean.
