@Sandfan: As teacher I am dumbfounded that most students can tweet but unable to perform cursive writing. What happens in the future when they cannot close legal/formal business without a signature? Do we simply revert back to the use of an “X”? Only 3:12 of my 8TH graders can sign their name. :(
I can’t write in cursive to save my life anymore. I learned it as a kid, but was NEVER any good at it, and when I took up cartooning in my mid-teens I started using block capitals for everything. Now my handwriting is FAR more legible than (and nearly as fast as) those of comparable age who write in cursive but badly.
As far as signing documents goes, your signature doesn’t need to be legible to be legal, it just needs to be distinctive and consistent. I sign checks with little more than my initials and a couple of flourishes, and yeah it’s more “my mark” than my name, but it’s recognizably mine.

my hs english teacher told a state teachers meeting that i could write the most complex storys. if only he would learn how to spell and use grammar.
