Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for April 30, 1988
Transcript:
Dad: How can you stand these cartoons. They're just half-hour commercials for toys. And where they're not boring, they're preachy. And these characters don't even move. They just stand around blinking! What kind of cartoon is that? Calvin: Meet my dad, the Gene Siskel of Saturday morning TV.

I’m becoming closer to that area too, but I see myself more as Richard Corliss or Peter Travers.

Too bad the comic ended before the anime boom. I would’ve loved to see Dad’s reaction to THOSE cartoons.

One of my favorite cases of irony. XD So according to Calvin’s Dad’s perspective, when he preaches things, it’s awesome. When cartoons preach things, it’s an atrocity. :P

I always rolled my eyes whenever older people critisised SAT AM networks like this. Is dad really going to complain about cheeply animated toy commercials when his generation grew up on even cheaper animated ciggaret commercials?
