    we call them crisps, because they’re crisp: fine slices of patatoe fried until crisp. Why chips?

    In Australia we call both of them “chips” (it’s usually obvious from context which you mean) , or at least we used to…

    I remember learning that British people call fries “chips” when I was younger, after being mildly confused by fish and chips. I asked if that meant that they call chips “fries”. I suppose you can see my logic.

    The English can’t even speak their own language. “Torch” instead of flashlight, “bonnet” for the hood of a car, etc. And they add an extra “i” to aluminum. They say “aluminium.” :)
