Nah – I’ll stick by my idea that the Pentagon is planning to do location “shooting” for Avatar 2.

“it’s a planet-killing comet heading here, … but don’t worry, we’re not going to let that happen”

Perhaps Lars from Mars has an intervening orbiting mass to intercept the comet. Penal colonies are expensive and hard to locate in anyone’s back yard. And, they can be profitable as well.

Ah, yes; Deep Impact, the most realistic (well, credible) of those disaster movies in 1998. There will be panic, and yes, naughtiness of several kinds. (Spoiler Alert for those looking for naughtiness); ‘ELE’ is not the Senator’s girlfriend…

Perhaps a fusion explosion of 97.835 megatonss will destroy that thing out there.

In such happenstance, VIPs are not who they think they are. Politicians & lawyers need not apply. You need farmers & mechanics.

Interstallar travel can only be feasably accomplished through time travel. Time travel requires the ship in question and its crew to leave time and space and to travel outside of it. This is achieved through the idea of resonance. Such a resonance could be achieved by connecting three excessively rapid electromagnets in a equal triangle formation. By switching these magnets on and off in a direct sequence, over and over at increasing speed, it is possible to accellerate that field that surrounds these three magnets at a speed above the speed of light. The speed of light is outer limit of this physical reality. When super optic speed of this rotating magnetic field is achieved, all of the matter within the event horizon of the field will dissapear from sight, as well as from time and space.

What are we going to do with those Presidential steel reinforced “caves” we have now? Where did the Royals live during the Blitz? Democratic leaders hide in caves?

Honestly, all of Wiley’s readers aren’t sci-fi fans. Danae is as close to sci-fi as I want to get. (And, gee, give it a rest about Wiley ‘copying’ the storyline. How insulting can you get???)

I love the way Wiley captures the military way of thinking. At this time, it would be easier, cheaper and safer to just dispatch a little unmanned probe and give the Death Comet a little nudge. But, when did the military ever want to do anything the easier and cheaper way…?

@NightShade09: as I noted at the beginning of this series, the military has already let slip, via a 2009 Air Force recruiting commercial, that they’re performing routine operations on another planet, one with two moons (“IT’S NOT SCIENCE FICTION. IT’S WHAT WE DO EVERY DAY.”) Are we really sure that “Avatar” was done with computer graphics… or is that just the cover story…?

Let the worse inmates in the penal colony escape into space where you will have to deal with them, or let the comet solve your problems. No Brainer.

To Wiley. For what it worth, I enjoy your work very much, especially the character Danae. I don’t take the subjects too seriously, but I guess I can’t resist making quips. Good health and may you always enjoy your work.

ghostkeeper: Have you ever considered how differently it may have turned out if the pro-Nazi Edward VIII had been crowned? Londoners survived the Blitz because they could see the royal standard at Buckingham Palace (flown only when the monarch was in residence). George VI had every security reason to go to some part of the country out of range of anything more operational than an FW 200 Condor, but morale was more important than safety.

P.S. The strips where Ele the single marsupial mom flips a coin to choose a candidate, and another where she tells her son to enjoy his nativity regarding politicians while he could are on the spot and I still have them.
