And why do the characters in Roman-era movies all speak with cultured British accents?

But they are speaking German,Barney! The speakers are equipped with Universal Translators that were developed decades ago. They worked so well, they also became standard equipment in television sets to this day! They’re also equipped with accent sorters for period pieces, but for some reason, only British accents come out!

It’s easier for the directors to cast English speakers when they’re working in Hollywood or London. Of course, they could probably find enough good actors fluent in German, but they’re too lazy to try. The one thing I had to give Mel Gibson credit for with his movies about Jesus and the Mayans is he bothered to use the right languages. Of course, he should’ve had his characters speaking Norman French, Scots, and Gaelic (the Irish native language is called Irish now, so nobody tweak me about that!) as well as pre-Shakespearean English in Braveheart. Can’t win ’em all.

I don’t understand how Mel Gibson had his actors speakong fluent pre-Colombian Mayan when, in tri-lingual inscriptions in Merida, Yucatan every 10th word in Mayan is of Spanish origin. And Gibson’s actors come off with the Mayan flawlessly.

There are too few speakers of Nazi (thank God) to form a Nazi SAG. Therefore they must use English actors or hire SCABS.

Chill, Barney. They’re just practicing, for their inevitable world domination.

You know what really burned MY fern? In Disney’s Tarzan, all the animals spoke to Tarzan (and to each other) in English. Since it was animated, they could have done all the necessary communication through gesture and animal-appropriate sounds (those portions which ARE done without dialogue, like the opening sequence and Tarzan’s battle with the leopard, are exquisite visual story-telling), and spared us the cognitive dissonance when Tarzan eventually meets humans. “How come Tarzan’s the only one who can understand the animals? They’re ALL speaking freakin’ ENGLISH!

Besides, we’d also have been spared Rosie O’Donnell…

Because Nazis speaking English with Chinese accents would be odd.

Apparently, he didn’t stop at shaving his face. Ever see a Tarzan with a hairy chest? Or armpits? Hmmmm… I wonder what’s under that loincloth….

Also, Barney, the Nazis had excellent dentists. Didn’t you ever see Marathon Man?
