They really shouldn’t bother having R or D after their names as they change that letter as often as the polls change. Just simplify it and put a ‘P" for ’POLITICIAN" as that’s all they’re really loyal to anyway.VOTE ANYONE ELSE 2012. Throw the rascals out! ALL OF THEM.Orion

The problem is, you have to vote someone in to vote someone out, and the second isn’t any better than the first. They’re still just a bunch of politicians.

As I approached this wonderful comic I said,“I will not make a political comment.”WILEY attacked me this week. Then I hear the slogans“GE made $gazillion$$$ and didn’t pay tax”I cannot tell these people to read and see that maybe the IRS owed them tons and maybe they reinvested lowering prices and creating jobs, and maybe over the course of years that they will pay industries average of 35% on profits, dividends tax of 35% and capital gains 20%. I mean if they were making bundles of money, why aren’t their stocks soaring through the roof? Why aren’t they paying higher dividends than anyone? Maybe those slogans are like politicians sound bites. The far right screams that liberal tax and spend programs will bankrupt the nation and raising a generation of crack smoking welfare receipiants. Proof? Oh, but it sounds good.I think every party ought to endore the war cry of every nation ever. “God’s with us.” Let the opposition know, if you don’t agree with us, carry an fiberglass umbrella..

The problem with throwing out all of the incumbents is that you get a new crop of things like The Tea Party..“We won’t compromise on anything!”
Which means that nothing gets done. Not even the necessary business of government.

If we can create a simple spectrum of with left and right, progressive and conservative the current political setting across the spectrum has lost sight of the Common Good.
Common Good Definition: “the common good indicates “the sum total of social conditions which allow people, either as groups or as individuals, to reach their fulfilment more fully and more easily”.[”
This is not simply socialism or capitalisim. This is what makes America great the assumption that anybody can do or be anything. Pragmatically it means policies and programs that provide opportunities for everyone to reach their fullfillment / potential. We have seen this in civil rights acts, in economic and social programs such as the “New Deal” and “Great Society”.
Americans historically have looked at ourselves with pride that we are different than the elitism/classism of Europe of the previous centuries.

A Tale of Two Cities / A Tale of Two Worlds.
Common Good Definition: the common good indicates “the sum total …of social conditions which allow people, either as groups or as individuals, to reach their fulfilment more fully and more easily”.
The Star Trek reference took the quote a step further than the sacrifice in the classic novel. It aspired towards the Common Good where both the few and the many sacrifice and are served.
Back to the strip it does a great job pointing out where Congress-Man has lost sight of the Common Good surving favored citizens. No preferential treatment of the poor here.

Apparently I need to explain this again. When the cartoon has nothing to do with politics, I don’t want this page bogged down in polarizing political rants. But when the cartoon is on politics, as today’s is, then political discussions are perfectly fine.
Please keep in mind that this is the comments section, which means commenting on the cartoon or the subject of the cartoon of the day.

i have to say it. the bus looks empty – so maybe everyone on board all ready escaped through the emergency exit in the back of the bus and the superhero was going to rescue the limo in the first place? maybe? possibly???

Right or left, politicians are in it for themselves – and anyone that garners their favor (ie, funds a campaign). Voting them out only works in the short term, because the newbies become the incumbants. Both parties are at fault (and the non-parties too) for all the greed and corruption in politics. So … get rid of the party system. It never really worked well anyway. Instead vote for the PERSON, not a PARTY. Might take a bit to tweak it, but it certainly can’t be any worse than what we have. Limit campaign spending. NO corporate donations. Get rid of all the incentives for being in a place of power, other than helping your fellow countrymen.Nah … never work. Greed wins out every time.Sad, that.
Guess you just want to make sure you’re in the limo, not on the bus.
Redhead55 about 13 years ago
Cut all politicians pay by two thirds, force them to pay into Social Security AND chip in for their own health insurance like most ‘employees’ in the real world do and see how fast they abandon the political band wagon.

Why do “we” continue to bash the people “we” voted into office? Listen up people; “We are the problem!”.. Pay attention to what “they” say and vote for the one “you” most agree with. Then; if “they” don’t follow through, “vote them” out!

I just want to point out, on behalf of school bus drivers everywhere, that kids are 50 times less likely to be in an accident in a school bus than in the family car. That is unless we are attacked by a congressional limo!

He gives no thought to the concept that saving the bus would also prevent its debris from damaging the limo. I’ve been trying to elect something besides D or R since the ‘70s, but y’all ain’t helping. It’s not that I think they’d be better with as much power, but a hope that with more voices none would be so full of themselves.

Good for Night-gaunt49! When will the American people wake up to what is being done to them? And when will congress be able to wean itself from corporate donations? Maybe never???
jkhandy about 13 years ago
Until Americans truly unite, and drop the red/blue BS, this country will continue down the sewer line. Stop watching FOX news for starters. The GOP puppets there only feed the us/them mentality which is exactly what the elite want. It keeps them in control, and the American people fighting with each other, instead of fighting against the very ones keeping them down. Wake up America!

bluskies about 13 years ago
@ Redhead 55- nice thought, but the Pres can’t do it, the Supreme Court can’t do it, the States can’t do it, and neither can you and I. The only body that can introduce legislation to change congressional pay and benefits is, by federal law, …CONGRESS! We can vote ‘em out, sure; but if they’ve “served” 5 years or more, they’re eligible for full pension and health benefits. Who can change that? ONLY congress.@JAHOODY- see above.
bluskies about 13 years ago
@ChappellGirl5-You say “common sense prevails”, yet place the burden on the male to raise the seat to keep it dry, and then lower it in anticipation of your own comfort. Doesn’t common sense imply that you should “look before you seat”? He really has no need to raise it in the first place (and if you have kids, you know a lot of boys don’t).

It takes 38 states to convene a Constitutional Convention. The only problem being – who will be in the Convention? That’s right, our current national politicians. I wonder, if the Governors of all the States were to form the Conventional Committee, what might be different? Or would the rich still run things and the liberals have to malleate society by making up the majority of teachers, thereby influencing the younger generations?

@lin4869Actually, that’s exactly how it works – or should – in our household.
The presumption here is that women sit to pee. Many actually do not, and if the seat or lid is down in the middle of the night, that can be a disaster, so it is left up. But the lid certainly should be down to flush.
