Yes, TTFN is indeed Ta ta for now. I suppose some existing abbreviations were simply adapted. The first time Sal saw people using LOL, he thought it meant “Loser Online.”

I’m fascinated that TTFN is known in the USA. I always took it to be a very British usage (and dated, I’d mentally associate it with World War 2 era entertainment shows.)

Maybe it started in the UK, and traveled over here. There was an old gag in B.C. about SWAK. One of the guys gets fresh with one of the girls and tries to use it. When he suggests that she knows what it means she slaps him with a loud ‘SWAK!’ Ah that Johnny Hart, he loved the sound effects.

For those of us with kids of a certain age, TTFN is familiar thanks to Winnie the Pooh. It’s actually the tagline Tigger uses whenever he leaves instead of saying goodbye. The kids using Twitter, text, etc. grew up with that one, so thank A.A. Milne.

I’ve always been curious as to how people “hear” the acronyms they read. Do they hear the words they represent… or the letters? I suppose it depends on the acronym, but when I read “OMG!” I “hear” “ohmygod!” (usually with a Valley accent).

How ’bout you? How do you “hear” them?

The first time I recall hearing TTFN was from Tigger in Winnie the Pooh, which is both British and old.

Sometimes the bottle is sitting on her desk, but it’s usually there somewhere.

The bottle first appeared in the third strip I drew, then fairly regularly until it became a permanent fixture. I think the last time I left t out on purpose was when Elena had hypnotized Rita into acting against her character. So the bottle’s absence was a visual clue to that.

We got “TTFN” from Tigger in Winnie the Pooh.

The real Pooh, or the Disney version? I don’t recall it. But I know the books far better than I do the films.

And actually, the bottle is kind of hard to draw. Bottles usually are. I just like using it as a prop, but drawing it isn’t much fun.

I knew I’d find an answer in the comments (even though I know there are sites for that, I don’t like to have many tabs open. I already have one on news feeds in my home page, another on FB and a 3rd to see other comics pages.

I have allergies but don’t take meds, so I need to sip on my water (and later in the day on my gin) so that I don’t have that tickle with a dry cough.
