Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce for September 12, 2011
Transcript:
Mr. Rosa, my goal in art this year is to create a masterpiece! An enduring work of creative genius that defines my artistic career! Wonderful! Just make sure, whatever it is, that it fits into the cubbyhole I've assigned you! They tell you to think outside the box, but they don't want you to think outside the box.

This is exactly what is wrong with the educational model, the factory model to be percise. Everyone has to fit in the box nice and neatly and unfortunately that is not how higher level thinking works.

@terry thourson – So true. Alas, no one has developed a sure-fire method of fostering creative thinking in people. A by-the-book approach is the best we have so far.

@ Stoic-Lion: True that. Bottling up creativity is wrong!

I love the play on “thinking outside the box” but it has to fit in the cubby. Well done.

Nate’s a painter, right? How hard is it to roll up the canvas?

I actually saved a tweet that someone sent today. It’s a quote by William Saroyan. It says: “Do not pay any attention to the rules other people make . . . They make them for their own protection, and to Hell with them.”

He could use the cubby hole as part of his masterpiece and make a statement about fitting in.
