Watch those tail light lenses with that gas hose! Those things cost a bloody fortune to replace nowadays!!And it will run about 400 miles on a tank full of gas.
Actually, the 1958 Chrysler 300D could be bought with a Bendix fuel injection system on the 392 Hemi engine. 0 to 100 mph in 24.4 seconds and a top speed at the Bonneville salt flats of 156.387 mph with Norm Thatcher driving it! You could probably get the same engine in the De Soto if you crossed Chrysler’s palm with enough money.
My dad owned a Gulf station in central Texas in the late 50s and early 60s. I remember selling gas for 15¢ a gallon. This was after a subsidy from Gulf Oil that allowed us to sell gas for less than we paid for it, in order to thin out the cut rate independents.
Yep, going to pick up my gal for an evening at the drive in theater. Stop by the service station and have them to put in a dollar’s worth!!! A whole evening out including gas, movie tickets, refreshments, etc. for less than $5. Best part about it, I was in college at the time and usually broke, and she had a full time job and paid the tabs often. Ended up marrying her 51 years ago. She got even by spending my money ever since! LOL
It isn’t the price of gas that has gone up, it’s the dollar that has gone to he!!.18 cents a gallon gas when gold was 30 dollars an ounce is like $10.80 a gallon gas when gold is $1800 an ounce. It’s your dear government that has screwed the money up until it’s completely worthless!!!
I remember 22.9 my first year of college in the fall of 69, that was in a college town on an interstate during a gas war. One weekend it was 18.9. Every place else it was 29.9 to 32.9, I could make the 240 mi trip home on $5 worth of gas.
When I started driving, gas was 75 cents a gallon. Couldn’t afford to keep a full tank. Twenty five years later, I still can’t afford a full tank of gas…
