From the look and mannerisms of the judge, I figured he would have preferred “A Doonesbury Retrospective”. Doesn’t he look and act a bit like Zonker Harris?

When you are sworn in at court, there is no legal requirement to either mention a deity or place your hand on a bible. In this case, one fantasy book is as good as any other.

The judge could be Tommy Chong, acts like him too. He recently played an unsympethic judge on TNT’s Franklin and Bash presinding on a posession case. Funny!

Calvin and Hobbes may not be the best one to swear by, considering Calvin’s loose take on the truth. :-)

Ahhh, the comforting fantasy that someone who’s inclined to lie will magically be compelled into truthfulness by putting his hand on a book. At least the ancient custom of cupping one’s genitals while under oath (giving “testimony”) kept one mindful of what was at stake if caught in a lie.

Yes of course, JoPhan, but a perjuror will commit purjury (or will not) regardless of the form of either oath or affirmation. A simple “Do you understand that you may be punished if you deliberately lie to the court?” “I do” would be sufficient. Everything else is meaningless symbolism and/or superstition.

But he’s a Calvinist! You’re denying him his 1st Amendment rights!
