Miss Bliss: Welcome, everyone! Petey: I wonder if they really caught that clown that was hiding in the ceiling. Miss Bliss comes out to introduce the play. There's a smattering of applause. From my obstructed view seat I can't see her but I can hear her. But my attention wanders.

The clown in the ceiling was doing the smattering.

Petey’s interpretation gives Miss Bliss extra-big hair. And, I agree with BlueWaves that “smatter, smatter” is a great sound effect. —But didn’t the clown finally fall down from the ceiling some time ago? Did I really just write that sentence?!
margueritem about 13 years ago
Yes, the ‘smatter’ is a great touch.

It’s (traditionally) “rhubarb rhubarb, barbara buzz buzz.”

“smatter, smatter” Haaaaaaaaaaa!! LOL! This whole strip is hilarious! I had to tell my husband about the smatter smatter part. Got him laughing too.

“Rhubarb, rhubarb” and “peas and carrots, peas and carrots” are both used, to give different effects.
If the mayor says “I have some exciting news!”, the crowd response might be “peas and carrots, peas and carrots”; if he follows that with “I’ve appointed my dog as Chief of Police!”, the response would turn to “rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb.” If he finishes with “I’m selling the Public Schools to pay his $8,000,000 salary”, they’d say “hugga mugga, hugga mugga” as they got the rope.

I’m just glad Petey can’t see Miss Bliss’ hair … that could be interpreted as clown-like frightening too!!

I’ve seen crowd noise written many ways but all of these are fun, and I love all the effects in this cartoon and the very creative stories- thanks, Richard!
