Wiselad, I don’t think Tiff was being friendly when she told Luann about Gunther – I think she was hoping to make her jealous and damage her friendship with Rosa and to hopefully have her break Gunther and Rosa up – Rosa is EVIL since she defeated Tiffany…

Tiffany told Luann? Wow. Tiffany never does anything without doing something snotty to Luann, so I imagine she must have said something snotty like “Hey, Luann. Gunther has more love life than you. He went to the movies with Rosa. You must be losing it with Quill. I just knew he could not possibly be into you when he can have me.”

So Rosa and Gunther were most likely just the secondary news, lost in the translation during her snotty rambling against Luann, most likely in the bathroom with Tiffany at the mirror checking our her make up or combing her hair while Luann was in a stall.

Since the first gossip column didn’t even appear until 1914 – when Louella Parsons’ byline appeared in the Chicago Record Herald – that’s one tall tale. Since he died some 4 years prior to that, ol’ Sam Clemens would have had a hard time coining the phrase in 1893.

Altho the American newspaper, “Paul Pry” was named for an 1825 farce about an eavesdropping tattling busybody, it was dedicated to ferreting out religious and political corruption.

The first time anonymous gossip really appeared on the radar was in London in 1886 when a squib (short news item), reported that Lady Colin Campbell had run off with another man, prompting a nasty divorce case. But items like that never appeared in any sort of column presentation.

And yeah, I’ve been on Jeopardy. I had to memorize all the books of the Bible, too

Lovely the way Greg has re-affirmed the true friendship that exists between Luann and Gunther. He is not presenting himself as if he were gloating, and she is truly happy for him. Also, she is probably still his best friend, the first one he wants to tell the good news to.

C’mon Luann and Quiil saw fireworks on New Years. Its just They – or rather Luann is scared that she will fall for Quill in a big way (NO, I don’t mean she’d “go all the way” with him) and then he’ll leave for Aussie-land and she’d never see him again and that would break her heart. They are both trying to be ‘Adult’ about their relationship and not rush…. But I gotta say, Something better happen soon before those two explode.

Geeky Gunther getting a very beautiful girl without half trying?I think that Greg is getting Gunther out of the way in order to REALLY “Kick-Start” the Luann/Quill romance. And I REALLY think that Rosa Likes Gunther MORE than Gunther likes Rosa.……or maybe I just need MORE COFFEE!!!

I didn’t know that Sam palled around with Crystal – I would have thought that Knute would have told Crystal. Oh, I forgot that Knute is Sam’s nickname. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

`1) Rosa is pleased with Gunther and how the date went so she’s telling people about it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

`2) People know Gunther – that he is shy & withdrawn, studious, and probably a bore as a date, so they are surprised that he went out with a beauty like Rosa. They are discussing it like it was REAL news. Maybe it IS!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

`3) I agree that Tiffany told Luann so that she would be jealous of Rosa and Tif would WIN-WIN by getting Rosa & Luann mad at each other.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

`4) Best friends CAN take it to the next level even after years of being confidants. Even though Greg has inferred THAT won’t happen, he says the strip sometimes writes itself. So…

Ooookay….. Hey, my sources can be verified, but unless Uncle John etc etc can cite a source, that one’s probably made up. People don’t usually come up with a description for something a full 21 years prior to its existence. Twain was a writer and newspaperman, so if he coined that neologism, it would have appeared in either print or his letters and journals, and If the term had even been a part of the lexicon during the two decades prior to Parsons’ effort, at least one would have appeared in print in the intervening two decades.

I have been a Luann follower from the beginning and see that some of you are not being completely fair with her…she has for a long time been very honest about Gunther and WITH Gunther..she loves him as a friend..she looks out for him and helps him..she spares his feelings..encourages him along and wants the best for him..she didn’t have to help him when his mom was hurt..or wear that dress..but she cares about him..she also saaid she will never hasv the same feelings for him that he has/had for her..so she is very happy about him and Rosa…the girl has a lot of intregrity..and she is a true friend..Tiff…well that is another animal alllll together..

I think Twain was the subject of lot of “gossip columns” before the phrase “gossip column” was used(or at least used as the title of it for the first time in 1914)………… read this article about the book by McWilliams, Jim. “Mark Twain in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 1874-1891.” http://www.twainweb.net/reviews/mcw1-rev.html ………………

Tiff might be wanting to make Lue jealous by telling her about Rosa-Gunth date; but there is also a chance that Tiff “thinks” (wow, she actually might be thinking?) that Gunth was able to get a date thanks to her time doing a makeover for him, so Tiff might be proud that Gunth was successful

Oh, come on, people make up idiotic stuff all the time, and if sounds even halfway plausible and the concept is entertaining, it will be seized on by publications like UJLLBR to help fill one of its myriad tomes. Find me a verifiable source to back up their claim!

Clemens was a journalist, so for him a column would have been just that – either a length of newspaper real estate or a collection of themed remarks. And if the idea existed back in 1893 – papers being what they are – a 19th C version of Cholly Knickerbocker (Walter Winchell was NOt the first there) or Page Six would have shown up in the 21 year gap, right? Guess what? There isn’t one. But after Parsons’ column appeared, then you get a real proliferation of knockoffs/ripoffs/copycats in other papers and the Hearst chain (which soon bought the Chicago Herald Reader) – which is proof that her column was the one that started the concept. Do you sincerely think that a magnate of Hearst’s rapaciousness, who’d been in the biz since ’87, would have missed a popular or sensational trick like that? It also escaped Joseph Pulitzer, of the rival New York World.

I do historical research so I’m familiar with the topic, since anonymous squibs of the Campbell sort and later gossip columns are great sources for verifying contemporary rumors. I’ve cited verified sources, and with all respect to Judge Judy, her “if it doesn’t make sense it’s not true” isn’t any sort of standard of proof outside of her TV show. Because it’s extremely subjective, it isn’t even close to a legal burden of proof, nor is it an acceptable yardstick for scholarship.

Gossip, so it’s peripheral. I’m sure not gonna take the numerous clumsy trollbait droppings, but feel free to skip over it if you’re not interested.

But really, is there much else to discuss other than the fact that Gunther’s shirt is green, not purple? Luann seems genuinely pleased for her friend, but Gunther will probably be terrified to ask Rosa out again because everyone will be talking about it. I’m surprised the news didn’t start with Knute via Crystal, but this way Greg can make us think there are more students in Pitts than actually exist. We know they’re not real, right? ;D

Except it was forced on him and he was not comfortable with the makeover. He went back to being himself again after Tiffany lost interest in him. Tiffany had a selfish motive for the makeover – she wanted a better looking arm candy, and she did this to spite Luann and Bernice whom Gunther just started to show interest in. So your “vast improvement from the way he used to look” was moot because it did not stick. Tiffany was not even upset he went back to his true look. She used him and was done with him. Her interest in him was gone. Then everything was right in Luannuniverse once again.

basically the ONLY CHANGE for Gunther was the no Eyeglasses(maybe a slightly different hairstyle), and that was WITHOUT Tiff, as she only made him wear a smaller more stylish eyeglasses, BTW, Tiff convinced him to wear a different style of hair back in 94, but he took it to a different level than what Tiff was suggesting, and Knute made him wear a jackett

Yes, @mordock999, you do need some more coffee. By no means was it “too easy and too fast” for Gunther. If you can’t empathize with his feelings, don’t comment on them. He went thru a lot of pain before he was able to go with Rosa. Personally I find this the most innocent, sweet day’s cartoon I’ve seen in a long time. Not an evil word! So don’t add any!

And while we’re at it, let’s ignore the (likely) motivations for Tiff telling Lu and just leave it as told.

In what way did the makeover stick? He looks like the same Gunther in his traditional plaids and black pants…the only change was the eyeglasses. He now wears contacts. That is the only visible change I observe. I doubt you actually read that arc – I believe you assumed she was helping Gunther because you are a Tiffany fan. Actually, you sound suspiciously similar to Coaster so you probably are because she is known to use multiple names.

GREG, Tiffany’s creator, has SAID Tiffany is a selfish, arrogant, self-centered, snotty personality. He specifically created her to be like that. Every story has to have a Tiffany. It would be boring otherwise. Tiffany is what the literacy sphere call an antagonist. She is a mild version seeing that this is a family friendly strip.

I suppose some people are fond of antagonists and will always find something good about them. Some people admire Lord Voldmort in the Harry Potter series. I actually have a friend who loves him. He hates Harry. He dislikes how he “used” his friends Hermione and Ron to save his butt. Actually he is right that they DID save his butt many times but they chose to because they loved him. He disagrees. But we are still friends. We know how to agree to disagree.
