If it were not for the cursed child labor laws, you could make the little buggers work it off.

… And a lot of planned parents are (like the dad from Calvin and Hobbes) asking themselves “Why didn’t we just get a dog like I wanted?”

Love Crystal’s subtle expression in panel 2. But Knute? —He’s just irritatingly flippant. Crystal could easily do a whole lot better than him for a boyfriend….

Children are worth every penny — in fact, they are less expensive than what a lot of people spend on golf. Besides, only the first one is expensive. After that you already have a house big enough to raise children and a car to haul them around in.

weblais about 13 years ago
That’s a little over $800 a month until the kid gets out of residency— better make sure you have a really good relationship with your kids, because there goes your retirement!

$13,600 per year from birth through 18….I suspect the first year is probably the most expensive…crib, diapers, baby food, milk formula, clothes in phases, toys, stroller, car seat, playpen, walker, among many others. Not every parent have baby showers for the larger items. My in-laws got us the crib but we bought the rest. The car seat was a new concept for them…they did not have car seats when my husband was a baby so they did not know which to buy. They never used playpen so they didn’t buy one. They never thought playpen in terms of keeping the child in one safe place while the parent is busy with something. It must be a lot cheaper to raise children their time – they only bought a crib.
They keep inventing things that parents come to need to have and become another expense. My grandfather slept in a dresser drawer until he was 2 before his parents put him in a regular bed as did his 4 siblings.

The sticker price for 4 years at many private colleges is right around $250,000 these days, without counting their first 18 years of expenses!

I’m happy that I had my 4 kids (even though they were close together because my X would not wait when I knew it was “that time”. After I finally divorced him I did a lot of paperwork for colleges to help them (and I had always helped them as much as I could with studies). Now especially the 2 eldest are doing well. My daughter was doing well in business until marrying and forgeting about work, and youngest son is a surveyor – not very good earnings now that construction is sparse. He not only is licenced but is the most thorough and concientious in his area. I was married at 21 so had the first when 22 and all within 5 years. My husband did not want his wife to work outside the home, so I did dressmaking and calligraphy during the time I stayed with him (including all my own clothes and dressier outfits for the kids). I remember 3 matching blue velvet jackets for my boys and ties for them and dad that matched dresses that daughter and I had. My married life was challenging, but no more than all the rest.

@PP – yeah, my college degrees, from a government sponsored state university were definitely a Bad thing. No telling what kind of crummy life I would’ve led without a decent, low cost, state sponsored education. To younger readers – this used to be commonly available in this country, but not any more, as you well know.:Right wingers fear people who can think for themselves, because then they can see through dogma and second-hand thought, and can’t be controlled.:Wingnuts always want to drag people down to their level, and so the educated are a threat.

I like how you deleted my comment Greg, but don’t worry, you’ve been identified. Hope everyone finds out about you and what you’re doing. Just remember, whether you believe in God or not, does not mean He does not exist, and you will face Him someday partner.

I love how people don’t use any kind of birth control and then are so surprised at the pregnancy. Seriously, how is that a surprise? I mean, what did you think would happen?
