I think it was Roger Bannister in the 40’s. Which started a craze of sliding down stair rails.
I think I did as a kid once trying to get home before my dad.

I used to race a classmate home (gradeschool when we walked a good distance) but I had a fall in my 20s -twisted my ankle carrying some flats out to the garden and now find I always have a problem if I try to run.
