Arlo and Janis by Jimmy Johnson for October 05, 2011

Transcript:
Janis: After living with guys so long, maybe I am caught up in the romance of it.
Janis: After all, it is the wedding of our only child!
Arlo: Statistically, there's an even chance he'll have another one!
Arlo: Sorry.
I have found after 4 weddings (3 girls and a son) that it doesn’t matter if it’s bride’s or the groom’s mom. The Dad’s job is gofer. And mostly it’s gofer the checkbook. Smile and keep moving.
The last I heard the divorce rate in this country(USA) is now at 51% of all marriages! My grandparents were married for 64 years and theirs was an arranged marriage! I have come to the conclusion that monogamy is not the preferred selection (male or female) for the human species. It’s not in our genes!
The divorce-to-marriage ratio can be misleading. Since people who divorce at all often don’t stop with one divorce (some people have a 100% divorce rate—all their marriages end that way), a rate of 50% divorce averaged across all marriages means there are still a lot of people who remain married to the same partner long-term.
@whmlllWho ever said Janis was “so virgin pure”? She must be quite interesting to keep a lunkhead like Arlo wanting to stay and fight the marriage/divorce rate. Go back and look at earlier cartoons, she is quite something.
gocomicsmember is right – about 2/3rds of first marriages are successful. It’s those serial marriage folks that drive the statistic that 1/2 of all marriages end in divorce. Of course, that kinda detail would ruin the punch line and a comic strip is not a classroom. This one made me smile.
If you want to see some of the older strips, go to JJ’s blog at http://arloandjanis.com/ because he uses a “classic strip” as the lead-in to each of his posts.

Did she learn to leave the seat up, like men prefer ……

Opposite in my house. House full of women…and my husband.

@Plods—Yes, indeed. What women want in a man is a servant with a paycheck whom they can hold emotionally hostage. That’s it in a nutshell.

There’s also a correlation between cost of wedding and incidence of divorce. After weddings these days, marriage pales and palls by comparison.

Divorce rates are down; 41% for first time marrieds. This goes up significantly for those who remarry and it brings the average up to about 50%.

First marriage here, 35 years and counting. Just takes a little work and commitment on both parts. Learning to put first things first.

Arlo & Janis have stuck marriage out for the long term. That means statistically, Gene and Mary Lou are DOOMEDsmall sample size, admittedly…

they do not have “Gene” as an only child. They have an older son named “Chip”. What happened to him?
