I see…this is like the levees in New Orleans that millions WERE appropriated for by Congress, but it was diddled with by the Democrats in Louisiana, and allowed the old levees to fail. Is THAT what Wiley’s talking about? THAT Congress?

@nomadicus:No matter who you vote for, the government always gets in.
bamboodan about 13 years ago
Just voting the bums out doesn’t work. One, you have to convince all the low-IQ voters to vote appropriately. Two, you just get new bums in. Instead …..
I think we need to change all the term limit and Congressional retirement laws to better address our deep-felt feelings about the job our congresspeople do. Instead of term limits or retirement per se, if a congressman is elected to 2 terms, rather than prohibit him running again, execute him. And no peaceful lethal injection; push him off the Washington Monument. This penalty does not apply for anyone serving only one term. Their ‘retirement’ is getting to live.
I bet congressmen would think twice about their ‘service’ to the country. AND it’d save a fortune on the congressional retirement scam.

Our heros actions are to do nothing and just impede the wheels of goverment. He might not get reelected, but he served his bosses well. He can live with the fact that the people he was sent to represent got nothing in return. Like always, there will be a line to fill his boots.

Remember 1776 (the play about the Declaration of Independence) where John Adams says:
One useless man is a Disgrace.
Two are called a Law Firm.
And three or more become a Congress.

I guess the shovel wasn’t ready for this project.

Why do you think one of my favorite quotes is “If pro and con are opposites, wouldn’t the opposite of progress be congress?”
wicky about 13 years ago
All congressmen/women should be required to take a vow of poverty. (for them not for us)

You want fast, decisive action? Then you want an all-powerful dictator..Read the Constitution: our entire system of government is set up, quite deliberately, to make it impossible to do anything quickly, or one-sidedly. The Founding Fathers knew only too well that an overwhelming consensus to Do Something Now means that there are minority interests, and opinions, that must be listened to and protected. They also knew the wisdom of “Act in haste, repent at leisure.”.An inability to respond quickly to a crisis is the price you pay for a government that is stable, prudent, and not ultimately tyrannical. Deal with it.

“Government is best when it governs not at all” – Henry David Thoreau. He said it best back in the 1800s

I didn’t know Mitch McConnell wore a cape…

But there’s an easy remedy. Blame the guy who was elected the day before.
tcolkett about 13 years ago
I hate to keep saying the same thing over and over, but…the answer is getting money out of politics. If congresspeople aren’t for sale to the highest bidder (like they are now), regardless of party, we can elect actual REPRESENTATIVES, which should mean representatives of the people (not the corporations). No political ads!! No clogging of the mail system with shiny brochures full of lies and distortions! Just honest debate and presentation of issues on public television and radio. It would work!
tripwire45 about 13 years ago
Yes Wiley, we do agree that politicians are useless.

Bravo, Wiley, once again, you hit the mark!

Uhm, the stimulus money? Most of it went to the IMF and to foreign banks to bail out European countries.

I think ‘Congress’ is aptly named. A group of baboons is called a ‘congress’.
Can't Sleep about 13 years ago
Gosh, today it took four comments before a right-wing looney lept in with a dose of unreality! I guess they slept in late today.(Do these pinballs take turns, or are they on a rotating shift basis?)Wiley, once again you’ve nailed it. BTW – Does Congressman have a sidekick? I recommend Lethargy Lad.

Good Stuff!! The irony is that Congress-Man is faster and more active than a real congress person.

McConnell’s cape is black and he looks and acts like Simon LeGree

Congress – or any part of government – is only as good as the people in it.If you vote in people who vow not to compromise, you’ll always have a deadlocked Congress.Compromise and negotiation are essential to getting anything done.

We’re supposed to have a republic and democracy; the current Congress is depriving us of both, in favor of plutocracy and corporate rule.(Mussolini had a name for the latter.)
x666dog about 13 years ago
nice analogy implying the “hero” is a republican. Based on Reid’s inaction this week, it could just as easily be ademocrat, maybe.

Congress’s solution to all problems – form a committee!!

Maybe we should show our elected officials the Great Egress" next year. (A P. T. Barnum reference for those not familiar with it.)

The righties just don’t understand the principle of “if it breaks it needs to be fixed”.

The “peace” symbol on your avatar is really a “nero cross” if you look it up it has a real horrible history.

You forgot blaming the other guy, not helping because they are not from the same party, and deciding to put it off until their next big vacation ends.
yohannbiimu about 13 years ago
What ever happened to communities working out their own problems? We ran the car into the ditch LONG ago when everyone expected the oligarchy in Washington, DC to handle everything for the entire country. I know that IT assumed that responsibility way back when, but it was never supposed to be that way.
benbrilling about 13 years ago
Wrong, Congress-man, it’s time to raise more funds for the next election. The committee can wait.
Joseph Krois about 13 years ago
What can one say…At the end of the day…Inaction is the key…And always will be…Till special interests rule…And the death of innocents though cruel…Cause the masses to rise…And to Congress’ surprise…Show we are better than them…Who like just so much phlegm…Cause our throats to constrict…And with our hopefulness licked…We kick them out on their ass…For all things must pass…Like beans from that dip…And now we can quip…That all will be well…And how we can tell…Is that laws will be passed…For all and one and will last…So that freedom can be…Not just for you but for me…And we stand hand in hand…In a truly equal land…

“And then, of course, as Heinlein went on to propose, those eligible to vote, and/or hold office, would be limited to such as passed tests in higher math – advanced calculus, if memory serves – while the “common man”, who wasn’t a math genius, would be expected to “faithfully serve” his “betters”? And this, of course, would be a “better world”? For whom?”
+++++
Monastic elections include all those in final commitment to the community—but even the Rule has a clause allowing only those members “with the better judgment” to vote.
It didn’t work out well.
The opinion of the whole is usually better than of any portion, although even better are the sort of “futures” polls where people can vote with their wealth.
