My wife’s Mac G5 died the day after Jobs did. We bought an iMac that has all the works inside the monitor case, like the iFruit did except a much thinner and larger monitor. It sure did eliminate a lot of cables.
I’m sorry about Steve Jobs, and today’s strip is great. That being said, I believe saying “if there was no Apple this strip would not exist” is hyperbole, Mr. Amend would have found a way. I think Apple are an arrogant bunch that overprice their products and make them incompatible with almost all the software I would normally use. My cousin, who owns a photo studio and has the bad luck of owning an Apple laptop, once had to cancel a job because she couldn’t find a particular cable that was only available at the “local” apple store, local being about 60 miles away, and closed on a Sunday to boot. If she had a PC laptop, there would have been no problem finding cables. Available anywhere…
I think that’s the point — he hated it, but, it’s still a connection. Through his battles with the iFruit, he earned a begrudging respect. And like two warriors after the war is done, he’s sitting down to the have a (root) beer with his former enemy to pay their respects.
I still vividly remember a Bloom County strip from the 80s. Oliver Wendell Jones throws out his entire Mac system for a whole new system that now features ‘Tint Control’. It’s in the Apple DNA.
I don’t know whether he started liking it, or if he simply accepted it because it was all he had. He did warm up a bit when he saw how hard it would be to add RAM, and Andy’s infatuation with “Cute” peripherals meant he got all the goodies, but it still wouldn’t play his games…
My first microcomputer was an Apple II. Learned machine code and everything. No hard drive, only a 5.25 " floppy. How things have changed. All we had were wired phones and a pad had ruled paper, Whether you like him or not, you can not deny he affected the world.
Much vitrol over the choice of computer hardware! Give it a rest. Yes it is easier to find parts for a Chevy than for a Lamborghini, but really, which is a better car? For hauling groceries, the Chevy, but what if you want a really cool race car? Each to his own and chill already! I like Macs, you like PCs but we all like to live in peace, right? :)
Jason sometimes hated and loved the ifruit, jason also dressed u like steve jobs and drew cartoons of him, he was his hero but one of his reasons of loving computer was all from Apple, rest in peacce steve, we all remeber you so does Jason
I can’t believe I’m the first (after 2 months!) to point out that the very best part is not the pun or the choice of Lithuania, but the blithe wearing of the pumpkin guts in their hair. That is the thing that made me laugh the most! They’re such, um, well, tween boys.
Steve Jobs doesn’t deserve the hype the media gave him. The man killed Apple’s charity programs and refused to donate himself unless it benefited him, inflated prices to ridiculous levels to further increase profit (instead of running an honest enterprise), exploited his employees, tried to sue his competitors into oblivion… this guy had the resume of a movie villain. And yet…

I’ve been waiting for this strip, wondering how he was going to pay homage to Steve Jobs. This is nice, and, I believe, very personal for Bill Amend.
Bittermelon of Truth about 13 years ago
If there was no Apple (the horror!) then this strip wouldn’t exist either. Thanks Mr. Amend!

It’s rare for a comic strip to bring tears to my eyes. This one did. Thanks, Bill, and thanks, Steve, for touching our lives.

Funny, he hated that thing and complained to Andy constantly about how it wouldn’t play any of his favourite games…

Hmm. Not to insult the sentimental intent, but I thought Jason didn’t like the iFruit. Or was is someone else?

Amend’s tribute to Jobs. No, time does not go back but then, Jobs entire life was about looking forward.

Nice tribute, but a bit inconsistent: Jason always despised iFruit.

The iFruit was like family to Jason; it made him angry at times, but he loved it.

Ironic that this strip appears on the day Daylight Savings Time ends in the US, so that we actually do turn back the clock today!?

When Steve Jobs passed on, it wasn’t just Apple fans that felt it. The computer industry as a whole lost a father.

And I was waiting for Bill to finally pay tribute to Steve Jobs.

“Turn back the clock” was apt because in USA, Daylight Savings Time ended on this date and the clocks had to be turned back one hour.
