Non Sequitur by Wiley Miller for November 13, 2011
Transcript:
From his fortress of incumbency, our hero of the people spots a familiar figure approaching... Congressman: And so it begins...again! ...And springs into action! It's the malevolent K-street giant, mindlessly destroying everything in its path to feed its insatiable appetite for influence! Man: Hellllp!! Congressman: Hey, that's a constituent! Giant: Fee, fi, fo, fum...I smell the blood of middle-class scum. The lumbering beast just smiles, then reaches into its pocket for a weapon. "Give me your best shot, big boy!" The mighty man of the people says fearlessly. The giant obliges... ...hitting the great protector right where he's most vulnerable... Congressman: Unhh...campaign contribution...you're on your own, folks...zzz ...Leaving him drained of a conscience, helpless and utterly useless. Stay 'toned for more inertia-packed episodes of Congress-Man! Worst...superhero...ever.

Isn’t it ’money talks, BS walks? Did it to ourselves , electing the same scum bags over and over and over again.

Inertia-packed adventure indeed!I notice that Congress-man is also a follower of Danea-ism – “Thou shalt make room for donuts!”

Captain Obvious to today’s Doonesbury strip please.

Come on, Dog, only 2%? I’d say we do much better than that. The wit factor is at least 50% here. …

@ Rodney: 87% of all statistics are just made up on the spot.

Sure looks like Romney in panel five….Wiley, I have one complaint. I find it hard to believe he didn’t eat his olive. Who doesn’t eat the olive? I’d pay good money to eat an olive soaked in gin. Does he throw away the cherries in a Manhattan? Seriously, though, this is a great strip. Excellent….

Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They both should be changed regularly, and for the same reason.

So, if we all agree with the problem, then what is the solution? At least in this nation, you have the right to become rich.

Let’s try this: Instead of electing the trolls, take money out of the system by selecting the house and the senate randomly from the list of registered voters in their districts/state for ONE term. One and done. Can’t be any worse than the system we have now.
tcolkett about 13 years ago
Only one post, so far, has actually stayed with the importance of this cartoons message. Our congress has been purchased, and is being run by corporate sociopaths whose only concern is amassing huge profits for themselves. This requires dismantling workers rights, polluting the air and water and food supplies, destroying the social safety net that would protect those destroyed by this system, taking apart the public school systems to insure that there is no educated electorate to see through the smokescreens, and getting rid of social security and medicare and on and on and on….until we finally wise up and TAKE THE MONEY OUT OF POLITICS. It really is the ONLY way to get our democracy back. Thanks Wiley. Great “toon”.

Merely note addresses of offenders and their apologetics…pass on addresses of ‘K’ Street offices to guillotine crews.

Who cares?!? Last week in Texas, we had to vote on ten ammendments to the state constitutional – nearly 5% of the population voted – that’s who cares!! The rest vote for Dancing with the Stars . . . . ☻

Yep… that’s Republican Con-gressman…. Hate the middle class….. love the rich.

You know, I really wish someone would help me understand: How is it that if some guy (whether I work for him or not) gets lots of money (whether through a job or through Wall Street), that somehow that makes me earn less? Does that mean if I get a pay raise, that somewhere, someone has to get a pay cut? When I started my own company and became successful, did someone else have to go out of business for that to happen? Coversely, if a middle-class worker quits or is fired, does that suddenly put a nice little pile of money into someone elses pocket? More than likely, it will cost the company MORE money to recruit, hire, train and advance a new employee, so I’m sorry – I just don’t buy it.
This is the real joke of OWS: The banks are corporations, and corporations must make a profit for their shareholders (in many cases, those are middle-class folks with 401K’s or money socked away in funds that are made up of banking stocks). By beating up on the banks and corporations, we are ultimately committing suicide – these are the folks that HIRE us!
The truth is that a CEO making a million bucks a year is either doing something right or, in a capitalist society, that company will suffer (and should!). Without question, punishment by the purchasing public is the absolute BEST motivator to any company. Part of the problem we have is not that companies make a profit, but that for many companies, the Government is the primary source of income, and the government doesn’t CARE if the company is well run, or if it produces a good product at a good price (i.e. – G.E.).
The real truth here is that if you eliminate the ability of companies to make a profit and put them under government control, you also limit the possibility of failure. You haven’t improved the lot of anyone. More likely, you just lower everyone to the level of the lowest worker, not raise everyone to the level of the highest. The elites will just become MORE elite since we are rapidly via government regulation and control making it impossible for the average guy to BE wealthy.
One last thought: Wouldn’t it be better if EVERYONE could succeed and become wealthy, instead of everyone wanting to DESTROY those who HAVE become wealthy? OWS is beating up on the wrong group of folks. I say Occupy Washington would make more sense – the Tea Party had it right.

Tom’s got it right. Take out the money and our congressmen and women may actually care about serving their country.
Maybe, instead of choosing our elected representatives on TV, we might actually read about them to make an informed decision!
I can only hope…

The “caped one” IS BI-POLAR! Inertia also quickly converts to mass (as in anchor) when trying to move anything forward.

Fritzoid, I think I agree….I don’t believe in term limits in any form. Elections are term limits enough. If people are happy with their congressman, nobody should be able to tell them they can’t vote for that person…..that would be un-American.. If you want the person out of office, vote him out! What’s so hard about that?Besides, that means in the last term, the politician wouldn’t have to care what the people think, because they are being thrown out of office anyway. Why not suck up to the lobbyists? Do what they want, and maybe they’ll give you a good job when your term ends….Term limits are un-American and are self defeating behavior

The racist comment upon which my comment of 6 hours ago commented has been removed, so does that change my own comment from “Reply” to “Unintelligible”? If so, I’m lodging a formal protest.
Dogsniff, as NebulousRikulau noted earlier, a distinction probably should be made between “Political (Partisan)” and “Political (Non-Partisan).” My sense is that the latter is running well ahead of the former at this point, and no doubt Wiley would approve…

“*Fritzoid:* Good job on getting that comment erased.”
It wasn’t my doing, but I’m not sorry it’s gone (except insofar as its removal made MY comment a Non Sequitur).
(I expect that seamlessly (and shamelessly) working the title of the strip into the flow of conversation will incline the judge to look upon my request with favor.)

Very interesting concept there, Dogsniff. I’d ask if you are going to publish your totals, but that would be a question and I’m on social insecurity and can’t afford to waste a buck.

Wiley is as “on” as ever; his comics should be printed twice – once here and once on the editorials pages…
Alxeter8 about 13 years ago
If his comics were printed in the editorial section then he and the newspaper would have to worry about libel.
