Gracie: Ok, for some reason, we're illegal. Nora: And the cops are after us. Gracie: I bet they already have our description. Gracie: There's only one thing we can do.
People should only immigrate legally. But these kids are here legally, they are just getting scared by people taunting them for no good reason. There is no reason to treat people badly because of their race or the language they speak.
The problem is that we’ve always had huge holes in our borders, and the people in power LIKE it that way. We get cheap labor – especially for picking crops – and easy scapegoats to kick out when times get tough.Sadly, though, in every major push against illegals, some legal citizens are caught in the net. With or without “papers,” a few native or naturalized citizens have the misfortune of running into an immigration agent who gets carried away with their authority, and before they know it, they’re abandoned in a foreign country or at best imprisoned and struggling to get sufficient documentation together before the deportation hearing. And supposing that Gracie and Nora were both actually brought into the country illegally – Is it fair to send them back when the only life they truly know is here? Who should pay the price for that? And if they are granted asylum, should the parents be deported anyway, leaving the kids in foster care? I don’t know the answers, but our lawmakers really need to find some.
You don’t find humor in overcoming obstacles? Actually, I thought the whole family, including Papi and Tia Carmen, were born here – not that it makes any difference to bigots who always need someone to put down, lest they discover that they are the real inferior people.
I thought this was the comics page, not the political opinion section. I read the “funnies” to get some relief from the rest of the political rhetoric, not to add to it.
How do you know they’re here illegally? How do you know that Sergio doesn’t have a Green Card and that Baldo and Gracie weren’t born here in the US, making them citizens by birth? You’re just as bad as the stupid bigots in yesterday’s strip. Shame on you!
Gracie is here legally (she was born here, as was Baldo), and Sergio and Carmen are here legally (I don’t know whether they’ve become citizens, though). I don’t know whether Nora’s status has been established, but Hector and Carlos could take it either way (I had no idea Nora’s family was so poor, either, until last week).
Most “illegals” are otherwise very law-abiding, if only to keep a low profile. They’re also very busy working long hours at low-paying jobs.
The English settlers at Plymouth and Jamestown didn’t have immigration papers to show the Americans 400 years ago. They came here to make a better life for themselves and their families.
Give me your tired, your poor,Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,I lift my lamp beside the golden door.
Thanks for the blanket generalization! Its awesome! Everyone knows that we(Conservatives) all go around tormenting little kids, just like all immigrants are illegal latinos….I read the comics for funny not political, for that I have the Cagel Post.
Gracie & Nora look cute in this funny strip and this is why I must real dozens of strips on this website. The reason for this because strips like “Baldo” aren’t in the Columbia, SC newspaper.
I know there might be plenty of illegal immigrants in this area, but I don’t fingerpoint at hispanic families and call them illegal immigrants. It’s supposed to be the state and federal governments’ responsitbility to handle this. Alabama, I think did a good thing in which the state wants ALL PEOPLE CITIZENS AND NON-CITIZENS TO FOLLOW THE LAW. Meanwhile, the Obama administration seems like they want to repeal the Alabama and Arizona laws. Why is our federal government wanting to keep the borders open like this??
I’m a retired U.S. Air Force Sergeant from the National Guard and the only work I can find is minimum wage jobs. It’s tough, I’m getting by, and I have to wait until I’m at least the age of 60 to get my retirement pay from Uncle Sam.
In Mexico, if you’re an illegal immgrant in Mexico, you can be put in jail for up to 3 years! Why does some of the U.S. people that no person is a illegal immigrant. I think I heard that quote from the U.S. Communist Party too! Now, these illegal immigrants are going to other places like Arkansas and California. In California, Governor Jerry Brown signed into law in which illegal immigrants and children can get FREE TUITION OR AID to go to any of the state’s colleges or universities. I think this would make people like me angry (And this should happen!). I retired from the Army and Air Force and I had to put some of my money into a fund so I could go to college. Unfortunately, Mr. Brown is making California get poorer everyday.
All I can say is that if you want to live in this country, become a citizen THE RIGHT WAY!! I don’t like it either when I’ve heard some hispanics say, “Get used to it!”" We Mexicans are taking over your country." “Also, we want to have ATZALAN BACK from the evil Gringos!” All I can say is, didn’t the U.S. and Mexico have a war in 1848 in which Amerca won the war FAR AND SQUARE? Also, I believe the U.S. government back then paid Mexico $48 to $52 Million dollars for California,Utah, New Mexico, and parts of Texas? Where did the Mexican government spent this money? Did Mexico Squader this cash? Anyway, when I hear stuff like this from some hispanics, this makes me angry!
But, this strip along with other minority strips (“Jump Start” and “Wee Pals”) place a good smile to my face. Carry On!
It’s a good thing the Native Americans who inhabited the areas near Jamestown and Plymouth Rock did not have the draconian immigration policies many people here are advocating or most of us would be living in poverty in some European slum today.

To some people, standing on the law is about as welcome as a clove of garlic to Dracula.

How do we know that the family hasn’t been here since the beginning and met the gringos when they arrived, and aren’t immigrants to begin with?
