…I agreed with you up until the last panel.Funky is a very good comic. Also,it is new everyday with thought behind it.What is more harmful to comics is the re-run strips.Calvin & Hobbes,Peanuts,Cathy,Fox Trot…you know tha #1 read sights on Go Comics. They are comfort food for the masses.Long running strips aren’t all bad(Blondie is always good),but most that don’t have the original artists with lower quality also hurt the biz.New comics like Retail are totally ignored….
… and I take umbrage at the “9 Chickweed Lane” gag…
Okay, so everyone from Dr. Burber all the way down to the lowliest street sweepers talk like honor graduates from the Harvard School of Advanced English Studies, but… well, some days I’m only in it for the artwork…
it’s a political thing……mallard f sucks . it sucks big time…but it simply MUST be in the comics pages because it is right wing.that is the most important thing. you want to have a strip that is syndicated? think limbaugh and the bucks will start rolling in. In fact, that would be a winner….just a daily strip of the big fat idiot with a microphone in his face spewing his garbage……
“Funky Winkerbean” has changed dramatically (in more than one sense of the word). I’d rather consider a long runner that has stayed mostly the same and wasn’t very good in the first place. The trouble is getting people to agree on one. I’ve never respected “The Wizard of Id,” but someone reading this probably does.
Sadly, some strips are kept on just because they appeal to the simple-minded. Nothing else can explain the continued existence of “Nancy,” “Frazz,” or “Mutts.” Give me “Pearls Before Swine” any day.
How long has it been since Tom Batiuk’s mom died of cancer? You can tell that after so many years, he still can’t cope with the loss, just like Les can’t cope with Lisa’s death after so many years. He didn’t write that book and have that fun run for Lisa’s memory, he’s doing it all for himself because he just can’t let goof her.
As for 9 Chickweed Lane, stop thinking of Brooke as an artistic genius (he’s not) and start thinking of him as an egotistical old man with a leg fetish. Don’t be surprised if both of his strips are a lot easier to understand because of it. The wordiness of the strips is a cover to hide the fact that he is unable to create a voice for each of his characters besides his own. The Sunday cat strips are pretty good, though.
One last comment from me. I want to acknowledge the source of my crowd shot. It’s from a “Hogan’s Alley” strip from March 15, 1896. The title of it was “The War Scare in Hogan’s Alley.” See the whole strip at http://cartoons.osu.edu/yellowkid/1896/march/1896-3-15.jpg

So seeing other people suffer gives you great joy?

Personally I much preferred the spinoffs Crankshaft and John Darling (if I remember the title correctly.)

And it’s interesting to have Daddy Warbucks as the voice of the Establishment when Tribune Media Service CANCELLED HIS STRIP!

Spot on! Funky used to be funny but now it’s just yawnsville.

Well, for a start – Tom Batiuk actually draws something….
But I still look at QV everyday… :O)

Funky W. at its best is great. If you could go through Lisa’s death without tears, you have no heart.
And Annie deserved a better send-off. At least they allowed Brenda Starr to exit gracefully.

But Mallard Fillmore is even worse.

Not a big fan of Funky, but at least the artist actually draws it, unlike lame-o cut and paste crap like Queen Victoria.

To each his own, especially that heavy-duty European Leftist Runar. Hi, Runey! See today’s Mallard?

I was going to do “Mallard” but I take on Tinsley too much as it is.

And also, on the record, Oliver is speaking the gospel truth in the first two panels.
