Claire! Why in the world would you even leave the turkey sitting out -

not to mention up on a high shelf where the room is warmest?

Thanksgiving isn’t till “next week” even in the strip!

Yes, no drama. The cat gets the turkey. And you get to look for the one left (somewhere) in the city.

Susan, you’re absolutely right. That was my first thought — get that Turkey into the freezer (I’d assume it’s frozen if she’s buying it this soon,) or at least the fridge! No salmonella, please!

    I doubt that’s a decoration — Lulu wouldn’t be smelling turkey.

@Antonio — I know strip time is different — but Paul says right in Panel 1 that Thanksgiving is “next week.”

BTW, in case you’re thinking of cooking anything frozen, yourself……

Your mother probably only left the turkey out for a short time.

Leaving it on a high shelf, especially all day, is a very unsafe way to defrost anything, even if it’s for cooking the same day.

And it looks like Claire even pulled off the plastic.

The outside is likely to spoil or become contaminated while the inside is still icy.

The safest thing with a turkey is to let it defrost, in its airtight wrapping, for a few days in the fridge.

If there’s no time, a few hours in a sinkful of cold water will work, or at the very least, inside a cooler or wrapped in many layers of newspaper or brown bags, though that’s not recommended.

If it’s a fresh bird, not frozen, it wouldn’t be bought till next Wednesday, and it would go right into the fridge.

OK — End of today’s food safety warning.

True, but when several strips make up a single day in comic land, it may actually be next Tuesday or Wednesday in their world right now….

Susan, I agree with your food safety warning and I would never leave for Lulu either. I have bought unfrozen turkeys lately even before I started to buy free-range ones that I do now- and I only buy the breast because that is hard enough to carve cleanly. Thanksgiving date is no matter to me as I cook a turkey breast about every 6 weeks and keep the sliced meat in my freezer, tho’ if family came I would probably do a whole one for them. I used to do stuffing for family too (even though I don’t eat it). Mine had the gizzards etc, sausage, chestnuts, apple, celery and a lot more, but always with soggy bread which made it icky to me. I now eat my turkey with Cuban black beans (mine) and sliced yams. I also eat in summer cold with avocado and a nice salad.
