I like Overboard so much I’ve even written to my newspaper to support it. But this lame cat-bashing stuff, over and over, enough already.
Besides, we all know Raymond and Louie are just frustrated they weren’t born as cats!

I have found the perfect CAT for the Crew and a perfect pet for NATE! Check out today’s “Smith” by Andrew Pilcher at Sherpa.

No, Dry, I don’t actually believe that cats will steal your child’s breath, but I am not fond of cats as a group. (There have been a handful of cats with whom I’ve had mutual non-aggression pacts, and one highly atypical cat which I considered an improvement over no cat at all.)
But I AM serious about my reading of Raymond and Louie’s attitude towards the man on the bench. He never says he LIKES cats, and Raymond and Louie do not assume that he does. They interpret his statement that he grew up surrounded by cats as a confession of childhood trauma, embarrassing to both the speaker and the listener, but something that needs to be aired if he is going to come to terms with it. They do not condemn him, they pity him. The last sentence (of my first post) was more a voicing of Louie and Raymond’s opinions than of my own.
(By the way, I am also serious that I believe depriving a child of a dog in the house is…if not exactly cruel, at least bordering on unreasonable. The strips in “Big Nate” when Nate asks his father for a dog (which he will never get), and those in “Peanuts” where Rerun expresses his longing for a dog (which he will never get) I find difficult to read.)

“I will go so far as to say that all cats are wicked, although sometimes useful. Who has not seen Satan in their sly faces?” — Mattie Ross (“True Grit”, Charles Portis)

Agree, fritzoid. Cats and dogs are a world apart tempermentally- just my deepest sense of it.
