Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for December 22, 2011
Transcript:
Luann: "I tried to read but they just kept asking about Quill and Tiffany" Gunther: "You're worried you'll love him to her, aren't you?" Luann: "WHAT?! NO! To HER? Ha! Don't make me laugh! No way! Nope and NOPE!" Luann: "Too much denial, huh?" Gunther: "In my experience, several no's make a yes"

If you say “no” enough times, it becomes a “yes”.

Luann, you are a bimbo because the right boy for you is standing right next to you but you are too shallow to see beyond the hunk factor.
ComicLaff about 13 years ago
Ha-ha-ha, look at Luann’s face in the last panel. So funny in the face of crisis!

what is coming?

Luann has acknowledged her fear. Now she must conquer it, by whatever means necessary, or give up any fantasies involving Quill with her.
muskratdottir about 13 years ago
Luann would be better if she’d stick to Gunther. Expose Quill long enough to that bimbo..and he’ll become numb to her vacant brain, and will start trying to read more meaning into her brainless twitter..there is a human tendency to try to fill a void. Either that, or he’ll just become hooked on her um..assets. Either way..Life is never fair..Gunther is a better bet.

man i just noticed, Gunther is prolly what Luann’s dad looked like when luannes mom was in high school, put the glasses back on him, and she found a man just like daddy

Gunther:
1) Take THAT Stupid Looking “Santa Cap” OFF
2) Then turn to Luann and Give Her one of the MOST Passionate Kisses ever recorded in this Strip
3) Then as Luann stands there Weak-Kneed and Googlily eyed
4) Excuse Yourself and Tell her You gotta Run, You just remembered that You have a date with Rosa

Maybe Macy’s bought the library. They like their employees to dress in black.

C’mon— it’s the first day of winter. While their shirts are Christmas colors, their caps are worn in honor of ancient Driuds. Luann has sent a mental message to Quill, and he is missing her as well. So that uncle will send for her to also come to L.A. for Christmas. It’s all in the gris gris, folks. (from N’Owlans)

I’m not sure Luann has Quill to lose. She (and Quill) keep denying the attraction.
Dragongirl2319 about 13 years ago
OOOOOHHH!!!! Gunther is so cute when he’s frustrated.
dunner99rok about 13 years ago
Personally, I’d prefer to see Gunther and Rosa become a serious couple, transforming Gunther in a similar way that Brad was transformed as a character. (And leaving Luann in Gunther’s dust.)
tcreole about 13 years ago
Okay, I no longer want Luann to end up with Gunther. His line, “In my experience, several no’s mean a yes,” would be a pretty worrisome attitude in a boyfriend, especially if they get up to any back-seat rasslin’ in the back of Gunther’s Yugo.
Dr Sheriff MB esq PhD DML about 13 years ago
Of course Gunther has experience with several no’s meaning yes…. His last date with Rosa went that way…. ****“No… …….YES YES YES…!!!!!!!”

Yeah, what you missed was several days of comments. In brief, Greg provides black caps/hats for the black/white paper cartoons. When color is applied to black, it is still black.

luann take i slow you have a lot of life in front of you. if quill is for you nothing can take him away and if not nothing will hold him.

COLOR EXPLANATION:
This question seems to have come up more than half a dozen times with regard the the Santa hat. I color the dailies and here’s the scoop:
Greg creates one piece of art for the daily strips.
The file is comprised of 100% black for the linework and lettering.
Filled in areas may be any percentage of black, which translates to a grey.
When that artwork is processed for black and white newsprint reproduction, the greys are converted to dots to simulate grey. The dot frequency is quite coarse compared to high quality print reproduction. Andy Warhol made a killing off of that dot screen.
For the purposes of online presentation, saleable items including future book collections, the grays are replaceable by a color. And obviously the white areas can be filled with a color.
The same gray may be used for different objects, but the colorist has the option to use a different hue depending on context.
If the object is filled with 100% black, it stays that way. If Greg had filled the Santa hat with even a very dark grey, I would have replaced it with red.
Gradient fills, the kind you may see in the backgrounds of some panels, are not replaced with color. The area is filled with a hue and then the gradient is overlaid.
In an ideal world, we could take time (with Greg’s approval) to redraw the Santa hats, but time contraints and the negotiated rate do not allow for that.
Sometimes Greg uses a pattern fill instead of a true grey. That was the case with Annie’s blouse a few weeks ago. In those cases, the patterns stays and a hue is applied to the exposed white areas of the pattern.
As was the case, the pattern was inadvertently dropped in the same storyline. I had no choice but to stay with the color used in conjunction with the pattern. Again, no time to make the kind of repair it deserved.
Color backgrounds sometimes literally represent something, like a sky, but most of the time wall colors are arbitraritly chosen and changed within a strip for visual interest. Luann’s room is the only wall color specified by Greg, the rest depends on what I had for breakfast that morning.
General rule I follow is to use more muted colors for backgrounds so that the characters snap out of their environment.
Greg prefers that Quill wears more earthy tones than the others. He’s an Outback kind of guy.
Tiffany’s lip color is more intense than the other females’ lips. Big surprise.
======
Hope this clears things up.

I’m confused. I thought “no” meant no…no matter how many times you hear it. Some past dates have alot of explaining to do then…..

Gunther’s behavior sorta reminds me of the scene from Cyrano de Bergerac, in which Roxane is praising her cousin for being so brave during a fight. His response was “I’ve been braver still.” She never understood that he meant he had not only given up his own hopes of winning her heart, but he’d helped her love, Christian, to succeed in wooing her.
ZacBSM about 13 years ago
If you’re talking about personality, yes. Both are solid and dependable. Someone said Gunther and Frank look alike – it’s Knute who looks like a young Frank. Gunther looks nothing like Frank.

Hey Louanne:LIAR LIAR pants on fire we all know ou are so jealous. We see your facial expressions in this weeks strips. I been through it myself.
Chuck373 about 13 years ago
If I was Gunther, I would be asking how they even knew about Quill and Tiffany. So when Bern is not around you dump all of your insecurities on a bunch of little kids? Gotta admit, though. It makes for a more interesting story.

Enough already. Let’s see what TJ and Ann are up to! I will be very disappointed if Greg doesn’t allow TJ to make good on his promise to double sales. TJ also needs to become a celebrity chef and come out with a new line of gourmet hot dogs for WW that has people lined down the street to buy.
lsheldon about 13 years ago
Trying to predict what young folks in that situation is a fool’s errand. Trying to predict how a cartoonist will report it…….

Mordock, then after the sexual harassment charges are filed, he should….what?
Chuck373 about 13 years ago
Once Quill gets to LA, the hormone suppressant in the Pittsville water should start to wear off. He’ll start to experience what a normal teenager feels like. Watch out Tiff. Your lamb is about to become a lion.

@Mordock, I think that Varnes has been around as long as you have; I think I remember him from Comics.com.

Luann tried to like Gunther. He planted a couple of kisses on her back in 1996, which stirred her brain a little. But she just couldn’t get past his awkwardness and geeky-ness. I’d like to think that she is not necessarily holding out for the hottest hottie in school, just someone with a little more take-action than Gunthie.
