I like glads too. When they are in season, they’re really cheap and they make a nice display. I try to keep them in the house as long as I can get them. It’s hard to maintain a proper funk when there are flowers in the house. And I disagree with Ma, I think Hydrangeas are for funerals, but that’s just me.
Maybe Burl is hoping Ma will take the hint and “move on down the road.” And what is “C. Darwin” doing on the wall? The Penny family and gene pool are the contradiction of his Theory of Evolution; rather, they are living proof of the Law of Devolution.
and Leaky, good to see you back on top. or almost [even if you….sniffle…. left me out]….I asked where you were yesterday.
Hope you’re doing all right….
and good morning Mikie and Grog…. and the rest of Crustwood.
The kleenex in Ma’s pocket is perfect. They all have one. Always.
GymShoe, can your super-duper DOS magnification see whether the flowers are actually orange inside the black outline?
Mikie, “Darwin” is Ma and Verl’s last name — was Joy’s before “Penny”.Julie probably liked the irony, for a family evolution forgot.
I love glads too…. used to grow them till the gophers discovered the salad bar…. but this is an old folks home. They’re wary of symbolism. Not only are the flowers tagged, but Burl’s wearing his “Licensed to kill” shirt.Hate to say it, but my normally very polite mother would have had the same reaction, had I brought lilies.Lilies meant death…. and daisies were cheap. When a distant florist, without asking me, added white daisies to the red roses I ordered for her… many years ago….. my aunt later told me she’d sniffled to her that it was too bad…. I couldn’t afford nice flowers.
I took my mom yellow roses on her birthday, because they were her favorites and I also bought her a “crystal” vase for them (from Marshalls). Someone must have thought it was expensive tho’ because it did not remain long after the flowers (possibly for 2 birthdays, I don’t remember -it lasted more than 1 bouquet). Glads are too messy with those thick stems. When I lived in IL, I used to buy flowers every week during the winter for myself and have an arranngement in the kitchen at least (if the $10 bunches that week were not all compatible, some went in the LR or bedroom), but Dominicks had 3 for 10 and I tried to choose those that composed a nice little bouquet. Now there are always flowers in the garden. I picked a nice arrangement of pine branches and pyrocanthia berries here this week just for the seasonal charm (pine aroma and the berries for color) I have a pretty ring of red flowers around the fountain in the front yard and there are some roses in one corner bed, berries in another and the cape honeysuckle right next to the pine tree.
I keep trimming the glad stems each day, and they last a bit longer. We get them here in August and September, and my husband always buys them when they’re on sale.
You guys aren’t going to believe this, but I’m going to tell you anyway. This afternoon I was in the parking lot of the local H.E.B. (A Texas grocery chain) and I was accosted by a young woman. Things must be really hard these days. I laughed all the way home and my wife laughed even more!
@ Mikie, I was acosted by a young man last year, but all he wanted was the spot where I had just parked (seems he had his eye on it); when I went in the store he keyed all around my car. That’s when it would have been Albertson’s or Frys.
@Susan, I also have tissues in every room of the house since I no longer use even allergy meds (figure if they are used in meth, they must be almost as poisonous as perscription stuff). I use salt water and some vitamins, and tissues!
@Susan, I know the allergy meds are not used like meth by themselves (get mixed with lye), but they are an ingredient (which is why they got hidden behind the counter where quantity is also restricted). Lye is also hard to buy (as I heard when we needed some to make lye soap for a class). I know that sometimes meds are needed, but drug companies make their money buy inventing more “needs”. I feel I’ve lived as long as I need to and only want to live as long as I can be healthy without what are poisons (every med does harm as well as whatever good). That is why I have so greatly improved the way I eat. I am the eldest member of my family and have grandkids in college. My only daughter (I have 3 sons) is about to marry for the 3rd time. I don’t like the way the world is changing and no longer believe I can change it ;-) I don’t want to sound like a downer, but that is the truth. I enjoy my beautiful garden and pool and my house, but it is a lot of upkeep and I’m not sure if my investments will last my lifetime. Some aunts have lived into their 90s, tho’ my parents only until mid 80s. I would not want to be bed-ridden or not be able to work out and scrub down the pool and empty the strainers.

They are not gladiolas. They are gladiolus, singular or plural.

My late wife would “loop” the glads in a vase so they didn’t stand tall. With other varieties of flowers in the vase it looked great. Just an idea.

Dazz! I’m all for natural cures when possible, but over the counter allergy meds are NOT used in meth! You’ve been watching too many old cop shows!
Methamphetamine is “speed,” and dangerous stuff.
A different amphetamine, Benzadrine, was once sold as an inhaler for allergies, and sometimes abused by “speed freaks” — but that was before WWII.
Much harder to abuse Benzedrex has been prescription-only for decades, if it’s even still available.
Over the counter allergy meds are mostly antihistamine, which makes you sleepy, not speedy, and is very safe and cheap.
There are more expensive ones supposed to be “non-drowsy” but they all make me sleep.
I don’t know where you get the idea that all prescriptions are poisonous!
Without any drugs we’d still have plague, smallpox, polio and whooping cough.
