Wow! That’s probably the first time John’s ever ridiculed her like that…and, he’ll definitely regret it. Although Ellie did go overboard in her silent treatment of him, she also may go overboard about how she responds to his mockery…by leaving him. He’s been a terrific husband and father….she should cut him some slack here.
I’m sorry but the cold treatment and results are stupid. It was a party, alcohol was there. He didn’t get in a car, he didn’t sleep with someone else, he didn’t kill anyone who cares if he had a few too many. Elly get real, look for better things to complain about.
it is sad that some folks think they have to call names. Get a life folks, this is a comic strip. One that I enjoy reading but it is just a comic strip.
Everything a man says in his defense in an argument is … grounds for a new one.
“While you may be constantly amazed at these people, from their comments it appears they understand this element of the comic strip. They get the joke and that is why they bother reading it at all.”
So let them enjoy it and shut up. They act like they think they are perfect because Elly isn’t. They DON’T get the joke, because the joke is that Elly (and Jon, etc.) are just like us. It’s not that the characters are imperfect; Lyn just uses a bit of hyperbole – emphasizing the imperfections – to help us laugh AT OURSELVES.
If my husband showed such disrespect for me by mocking me this way, I wouldn’t give him the silent treatment . . . I’d leave him. Life is too short to be married to someone who’s supposed to have your back — ALWAYS, no matter what! — then unexpectedly buries a “knife” in it when you aren’t looking.
I know this is yesterday’s conversation, but it’s an interesting one so I’m replying! ;)
I agree, there are definitely double standards for both genders, but you miss my point. No body was calling Homer Simpson a c**t or a b*tch for his antics . . . . I also don’t recall many people talking about how Ricky just needed slap Lucy in the face and put her back in her place as being submissive. (Not to mention, both of those characters functioned as the “lovable fool” who wasn’t meant to be taken very seriously – John and Elly Patterson are meant to represent more realistic characters) I’m not pointing out that people find Elly’s behavior silly and over the top, because that’s their opinion and rightfully so, but I AM pointing out that some comments are derogatory and violent.
BTW, women struggling to be good wives and mothers is still very much used in the mainstream for laughs – and it is funny, because everyone has those struggles to be a good spouse/parent and it helps us to laugh at ourselves. (Parenthood, Modern Family, Two and a Half Men, How I Met Your Mother, etc . . .)
The comments I mentioned with the name calling etc. were specific comments on this board from specific posters on this board – those been removed because they broke the house rules. (Is my guess anyway – they were previously there when I originally posted.)
I can certainly agree to disagree on all the characters/shows we’ve used as examples because I think fundamentally we don’t see eye to eye on not only the characters, but how the humor in the show functions on a basic level.
And finally, NO ONE is like Lucille Ball or ever will be! ;)
Thanks for the interesting conversation . . . it’s good to be able to debate one’s opinion respectfully and hear what other people think.

He’s right. She’s wrong. (And she started it in the first place). There, done and done. Time to get over yourself Elly.

OK, John’s behaviour was over the line, but Ellie is being self-indulgent by not talking about it. Get angry, tell him how you feel and get over it.

Oh, John, get ready and go to work. She’ll get over it eventually. Next year, I bet she won’t be so determined to throw a party!!

Panel 4 is blacked out, with “THUNK” and “kuthunk” … Elly hitting John, John hitting the floor...John, open mouth, insert leather shoe.
