Most of my Christmas as a child was the clothes I needed for the year, with one toy and in the stocking some pretty fruit and fancy candies anong with stocking stuffers like erasers and pencils for school.
My Mom, now 93 told me recently that she and her siblings only got socks and underwear for Christmas, and they were happy to get them. My how times have changed…
During slavery, Christmas was the day the slaves got their yearly allowance of clothing. Typically one dress or one shirt and pants. Sometimes a pair of shoes. For some the tradition stuck.
Also it’s a way for grandparents to help out the parents budget discretely. For us it was the yearly bathrobe and slippers.
Sophie may be Doug’s playmate, but she’s never going to be a PADS dog. (think guide dog for the disabled). But she does exhibit exceptionaly skills at climbing, jumping, hunting down and opening presents,

I always got great gifts as a child, especially from my grandpa. He got me my first tricycle, first bicycle and a Red Ryder BB gun.

Doesn’t anyone wonder how Sophie got up that high and jumped down like a cat? I certainly will be wondering that for a long time.
