Ear tags were the norm for cattle here in the Missouri/Kansas/Oklahoma/Arkansas 4-states area for many years, and are still in use, but an increase in rustling triggered a return to branding as a surer and more permanent way of identifying ownership.

Actually, a lot of farmers and ranchers use ear tags now. A lot less painful for the cattle, and a lot easier to see.
