Arlo and Janis by Jimmy Johnson for December 27, 2011

Transcript:
Janis: I can't believe how much Meg has grown in a few months!
Janis: She's gotten so tall!
Mary Lou: Well...her father was tall!
Janis: You've never told me about him.
Mary Lou: That's about all I know!
Even so, this double standard for men and women should stop. Besides, there are a lot of teenage girls that get pregnant in HS, due to lack of information. So who’s to blame? I guess society in being absolutely hypocrite about sex.
“You never told me about him.” No offense intended, but “What’s to tell?” Clearly, she is a single mother, the father is not supportive … ugh…. video playing man-boys these days! ugh! ew! I’m so disgusted at my generation and younger!
Or she could have believed the lies of a boy with the wrong perception of manhood and made a big mistake. Unfortunately, girls believe a lot of the lies fed them in the “right” moments, and guys who haven’t been raised to respect them for the awesome, wonderful creatures they are are only too willing to provide them with that flattery. Kudo’s to Janis for not resenting her youthful error and thus judging her adult life by a silly, ignorant childhood.
@gary4160 Re: Who’s in the background from yesterday.Duh. You’re completely right. I was focusing so much on the background that I ignored Janis in the foreground. My bad!
Re: Meg and MaryLouOne of my best friends from high school was an unmarried mother, and she was NOT a slut. She was (and is) a smart and ethical person who made one, count it one mistake. In college, she went to an off-campus party, had too much to drink, and her high-school boyfried was there. You can probably figure out the rest. She told me the guy offered to marry her and said her response was “It was a mistake to sleep with you. I’m not going to make it worse by marrying you.”When a girl makes “a mistake”, the entire world knows about it. When a boy (not a man, a boy) makes one, nobody knows except the girl and maybe the parents and the courts.
Marylou’s answer does not warrant any name calling from ignorant twats.
Her answer of ‘thats all i know’ simply put states that firstly when she was in love she thought she knew him inside out, like everyone in love, you thought he was the one you have been waiting all your life for, you were made for one another, you wish and hope your partner will love you till the end of time.
But the day she knew she had meg and he ‘dissapeared’, she just realized that she didnt know him at all.
TIme out, people! Yes, Mary Lou DID make a mistake as a teen, but she’s making up for it by raising Meg right, and will have a proper wedding with Gene soon enough.
A slut is someone who sleeps around. I’ve heard men called “slut” before. In this case, calling her a slut based on her having a child without being married is not accurate, unless you know something we don’t.
It’s sad how such a horrible word can be attributed to a situation that you know nothing about.
Maybe I’m wrong but in the earlier strips introducing her she ‘seemed’ real flirty and wore inmodest swim suits and other clothing which naturally ‘tempted’ gene. She certainly wasn’t protrayed as being innocent or carefull about how she interacted with boys she had just met… She already had Meg and still flirted heavy with Gene, who was the ‘innocent’ one in the relationship…And now the story line is that she is also ‘sleeping’ with Gene…and it seems like we were led to believe it was his first time, so she was the ‘seducer’, in other words she took advantage of Gene…. Maybe she didn’t learn from what most are saying they are assuming was her ‘one’ mistake but she wasn’t innocent or careful by any means… And now Gene changes his entire life to to the right thing by her and will accept the responsibility of fatherhood… I’m not saying that is a bad thing or that the storyline is not heading in what looks like a ‘good’ direction, but it could change at the writter’s whim… Will the real’ father’ show up? Cause trouble? Would she decide to go back with him??? Hope not… but girls can be the ‘bad’ person in this type situation too…
Back to the plot line. This leads an opening for Meg’s father to show up before the wedding and create tension. Also for him to refuse to let Greg adopt Meg. Possibilities are endless.
Almost 50 comments mostly based on the readers’ views about Mary Lou. Are Plods and I the only ones wondering why Mary Lou didn’t give Janis’s unsubtle query the response it SO deserved?

A slut, or is it just selective amnesia?
Pharmakeus Ubik almost 13 years ago
A slut would have many possible fathers to know little about. People sometimes make bad choices, or are lied to, Mary Lou appears to be one of those.

why would she be a slut, yet if it was a man he would be a stud. the two should be placed at the same level… positive or negative

If you had been following the storyline over the years you would know that She was still in HS when she had Meg.

My friend Michael used to say he had “a mother and five suspects”…

pbarnrob — if Michael were a girl, that would be the plot of “Mama Mia.”

I’m betting Mary Lou comes out looking pretty good in this.In the end, though, they’re still just comic strip characters.
