I always wonder which one of the Germans knew American vernacular. And had to deliver the meaning. I highly doubt they got it from context. . ..

And it wasn’t “Nuts”, either. It got cleaned up for public consumption. Pretty much the same word in Englsh or in German, though.

I once saw an interview with a German officer who was at the Battle of the Bulge. He said the German command didn’t get the meaning of the English slang — some of their guesses were comical. But they could tell that General McAuliffe’s answer was “No.” And that his attitude was, “Eff you and the Panzer you rode in on!”
