I’m mostly with Dad but I’m a firefighter/paramedic recovering from an accident and cannot wait to get back to my own version of the real world. Even riding my own bike into town and back, for therapy, is barely edging out my sanity.
If you ever see one of the few pictures of Watterson ever released, he either looks like Calvin’s Dad with a moustache, or Uncle Max with kempt hair and glasses.
Or my opinion of cyclists who ignore the wide, empty bike lane on one side of a city street, and peddle down the sidewalk on the opposite side playing Dodge the Pedestrian.
Side walks are a no-no. Imagine a car turning left into a driveway on a city street, only to have to unexpectedly (people don’t “see” us in the road, much less the sidewalk) stop for the bike ……right in front of car it was trying to turn in front of.
To gmartin and orinoco..I’ve lost count of the times I’m riding my bicycle and see pedestrians, including moms with strollers, invading the bike path while there is a perfectly good sidewalk literally 10 feet away…
And as for the dweeby clothes, kea, the only cyclists I see wearing them are the “Lance Armstrong wannabes” that go way too fast on the bike path. Most cyclists I see wear perfectly normal clothes…
Let him Mom. Just give him one little condition: that he take Calvin with him when he goes biking. He’ll be back to work so fast it’ll make your head spin.
Only Calvin’s parents appear in today’s strip. Can anyone think of another strip that doesn’t contain Calvin or Hobbes?(I know, I know……. Dilbert, Luann, FoxTrot, Cathy…….)How about a strip where Hobbes appears but Calvin doesn’t?
How he can enjoy riding his bike in hot weather is mystery to me. I went biking with my friend yesterday it was so hot! (We got the hose after poured it on ourselves afterwards though. Which was fun.) : )
Dad would be a lot happier if he hadn’t become a dad. Some people shouldn’t have children. He could have been playing with Calvin but there’s no love lost between them, is there?
It was a Sunday, too, when I broke my left foot last summer. The best part about it is that you can tell everyone how and when it happened, if it hurts, what exactly got broken etc. etc. Especially if they don’t want to hear it!
@SandyShore: The one with the two Hobbeses was the one I was thinking of also. I suppose one could argue that Calvin was still in the room with them and was imagining that he was gone, but that would ruin the time-travel sequence. Regardless, Calvin doesn’t appear in that strip, except when one of the Hobbeses draws a picture of his head.
Replace Dad with Calvin, the bike with a wagon, the path he’s riding with hilly country and a cliff, throw in a frightened Hobbes, and suddenly it appears the apple falls not far from the tree…
I once saw an infomercial on tv for a bike that would shifts its own gears – it was called, I think, an EZE rider, or something like that. It looked like a pretty cool bike. I wonder what happened to the company….

Actually Watterson wasn’t a Calvin as a kid but is very much Calvin’s dad.

Yesterday I did twelve miles in 90+ heat in about an hour. Those “dweeby” clothes keep me alive and prevent chafing

I have all the same problems cycling that everyone here (and Calvin’’s dad) are experiencing…and my bike is a stationary one in the gym!

With all the sarcasm dad is spewing out its obvious he would rather be a couch potato or computer potato some day.

Oh I don’t know though….the comment about quitting his job to take up bike riding sounds very Calvin-like to me! Chip off the old block perhaps.
