Actually, the one who knows has been telling us to our face for centuries – and when we wake up and realize it, we’re going to look back on days like this and wonder why we were so blind, deaf and dumb about it.
I like math. Try this. Think of any number, negative or positive, double it, add 4, divide in half, subtract original number. Why does the answer always come out to be 2? I know why.
The point of decimal numbers is the dot between the ones place and the tenths place. But the point of human existence… take your index finger and aim it upwards – now you’re pointing toward the point.
You know, Buddhism has a lot to say on the point of human existence . To move spirally upwards in our evolution, to be more and more of what we were intended to be. To fulfill all our desires, and then be desireless – content and peaceful. Imagine how a place would be if all who live there were content and peaceful ?
I do hope schools, teachers – and we all let this question take on its real significance rather than brush it under the carpet. Yes Calvin, this question must be answered before x(x+2)=8. How does quadratic help u in life, anyways!!
“boring” isn’t content and peaceful! Boring is dissatisfied! But I don’t recommend Buddhism, for various reasons. Nobody could ever attain such Nirvana, anyway.
Right now, I think that the point of human existence for Calvin is to “move on to the next chapter”. “Be resolute with the present moment”. – Johann von Goethe
Some problems have THREE answers:Six blackbirds and eight sparrows are sitting on a wire.A hunter with a shotgun comes along, blasts away, and picks off three blackbirds and four sparrows.Q. How many birds are left on the wire.A1: Three blackbirds, four sparrows.A2: Seven birds (the question was how many birds)A3: NONE: You believe the other seven are just going to sit there waiting to see what happens next?
Calvin, you ask good questions but you ask the wrong people your Dad or Mom might answer this one. That is if your not just trying to get out of doing some math.
Agree with bmonk… the point of human existence is to figure it out, and live life accordingly. Each of us is here for good reasons. Our external reasons and circumstances are different and unique for each individual. The internal reasons are the same, to learn life’s lessons and progressively evolve our souls to a sublime state of inner peace, joy, creativity etc… in other words, enlightenment or nirvana. That’s what the various spiritual traditions at the inner core of each religion are striving for, and unfortunately most of us do not go beyond the outer rituals to a deeper understanding.
I always thought Hobbes was actually Bill Watterson. Don’t know for sure. I liked your post on 3-1-12 on Real Life Adventures, about the cars. Here’s a site you would like www.americantorque.com/game/car-show-50s/
sometimes I’d really like to have a glimpse into the kind of guy Calvin turns into about 20 years from then <3 I’ll bet he’d be awesome to date as an adult.

If Calvin had seen Hitchhikers Guide To the Galaxy, he’d know the answer to that question.

-6.7445626… is the other solution. With quadratic equations you always have two solution except if “B” (Ax^2+Bx+C=0) is zero or B^2-4AC is negative.

Perhaps one point of human existence is to figure out the point of human existence—and meanwhile to continue to function until we do.
.
For Calvin, just now, part of that second half is to do the classwork and learn enough to maybe consider the first half.
