I’m quite secure in my own beliefs, and my own experiences. I’ll let the inevitable arguements between the informed, the misinformed, and the woefully ignorant commence. As much as I’d like my words here to matter, you can’t change the opinions and beliefs people have held for years with an online comment. To whomever reads this, may the peace of Christ be with you.
There is no spirit world. No gods, no devils, no angels,no demons. No sprites, no leprechauns, no trolls, no elves. No Santa, no Easter Bunny, no tooth fairy. No heaven or hell either. There isoly life and death. Live what you have to the fullest.
@Michael Erickson: But even if you believe what you just wrote, at least lead a MORAL life and try not to hurt anyone else or destroy the earth’s ecology.
That’s part of the problem. You need to take a lot more than one day to read it in its entirety. Just reading a little bit is like calling a random person and asking them about cosmology.
Personally, I’m secure in the knowledge that humans are, in general term, idiots. I’m also certain that we will likely be the cause of our own destruction, should such a thing happen.
Of course God and Satan exist, but only in as much as anyone of us sees them. They are not so much physical entities as they are concepts, concepts whose personification was meant to make them more believable to people. It is hard to imagine that all the universe would exist without being created, of that there seems to be a constant flux between good and evil without thinking someone must be in control of them. I have very different concepts of God and Satan; they are part of my world but as a scientific explanation for everything, not some mysterious beings.
What I find hilarious is the idea that the existence of a “god” (in which I don’t believe, incidentally) means that a “devil” must exist. Non-Abrahamic religions don’t have a devil, and sometimes (as in the original, Hinayana form of Buddhism and in the original form of Jainism) no god either.
How did we get here? How did here get here?If there’s no afterlife, then let’s eat drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die (quoted from Isaiah, Epicurus, and the Apostle Paul)! “If that’s all there is”, there’s only temporal purpose, and what does it matter after we’re gone? How did any purpose or anything else come into existence if there’s no God? Don’t mention evolution! It’s an impossible fantasy which is the only alternative to no God.
The funny thing about religious zealots is that they find it improbable that life came into being through the process of evolution (something supported by Chemistry, biology geology and paleontology) but find the god ideas of ancient and ignorant people who lived millenniums ago perfectly credible.
We believe in a Devil for his prophet lived in an undisclosed location for eight years guiding a brain-dead puppet into thinking he was president. There must therefore be a God because nature abhors a vacuum.
Hobbes has a point: we are corrupted, fallen just far enough to know our misery and to reach, in vain, for what is better. Do we really need the devil’s help? Of course not—but the devil is willing to offer us ever more misery.
@King Shark I most certainly am. 8 years in an undisclosed location… doesn’t describe anyone. Bin Laden? Active for over 30 years. Bush? Huh?
@Kali39 If “nature abhors a vacuum” implies existence of God, then I feel as safe as ever being an atheist. The concept of “nature abhors a vacuum” was disproved by Evangelista Torricelli in the 1600s when it was shown that the “sucking” force of vacuums comes rather from an imbalance of pressure. Science always beats nonsense, remember that kids.
@Michael Erickson"Morality and believing in a spirit world are two very different concepts and not related at all." but many people are only moral because they believe a “spirit” may punish their evil-doing. Without this belief in a spirit, many people will have no incentive to act morally.
I think we got to make bigger bombs, then the west can prove there is a god, well at lest the believers from the west.Poor Calvin and Hobbes a discussion they will have many times till Calvin becomes a man.
