“Did you know, in ancient Rome a gladiator, an undertaker and an actor/actress were at the very bottom of the social ladder — the absolute dregs of society.”
Yes, and as a corollary the performing arts have always provided a haven for misfits and outcasts: homosexuals, Jews, communists, other weirdos and dreamers and freethinkers who keep life rich and interesting. And they tend to be better-looking on the whole than the rest of us.
The influence they enjoy is the influence we gave them, because “we like to watch.”
We are the music makers,And we are the dreamers of dreams,Wandering by lone sea-breakers,And sitting by desolate streams;—World-losers and world-forsakers,On whom the pale moon gleams:Yet we are the movers and shakersOf the world for ever, it seems.
I find awards shows boring. All of the other networks show re-runs on Oscar night. I guess I’ll have to go to bed early and wake up refreshed for work tomorrow.
I didn’t have any other strong rooting interests this year (either pro or con), but I’m happy “The Artist” won big. (Actually I lost a $5 bet, because I expected that “The Help” would win Best Picture.)

And yet Nero chose to perform regularly. That’s like the U.S. President scrubbing toilets every week.
