As legaleagle48 intimated, a lot of the ideas people have about Sherlock Holmes do not come from the Conan-Doyle canon. It is interesting to note that even after retirement, Holmes acted as a spy for his country in the run-up to the Great War (WW 1), as revealed in the short story “His Last Bow.”
