Frazz by Jef Mallett for February 22, 2012
Transcript:
Mrs. Olsen: Caulfield is doing his Presidents Day report on the president of Fungicorp. He thinks I don't know anything about Fungicorp so he can make things up. Let him try. Teachers can look things up on slickipedia, too. Frazz: How's the report coming? Caulfield: Finished writing his slickipedia bio last night.

It’s a brand new world out there Mrs. Oleson….Caufield, are you sure they won’t catch it before she looks it up? Besides, shouldn’t you be “updating” Mrs. Oleson’s?

Because Caulfield is willing to do way too much work to avoid doing the minimal amount of work actually requested.

I hope he gets everything that is allowed.

Good teachers would check the refernces, sl Slickipidia would have those at the bottom of the page. Hence Caulfield woul have to create fake sites to back those up too. Much more work than research Zachary Taylor. I guess his point is that he can lead adults on wilde goose chases instead of conforming to standards.

Go, kid. When I was in middle school we had a great teacher…he was funny, too…and I asked him his favorite amusing book…found it, read it aloud at home. After that he thought I was funny with my wisecracks, and I got a column in the school paper. And somewhat later something of a career…why isn’t anybody laughing?

If Caufield put even a tenth of the work into his assignments as he does into avoiding them, he might actually get to be as smart as he thinks he is.

As a teacher I often googled lines I thought were a little too sophisticated for students’ writing. Interesting things I would find. A poem ripped off from a blog; an entire paper downloaded with only a change of font from an obscure Canadian newspaper. No work put into it. Caulfield at least seems to working at it, And wasn’t the original complaint that her directions were too vague?

I enjoy identifying with Caulfield. Frazz and Jef, too. High school was the worst seven years of my life.

In High School, my Honors Chemistry class was assigned a paper “on any chemistry related topic”.I did one on “the History of Chemical Warfare”.Got an “A”.
Afterwards, the teacher asked where he could read some of my listed sources.I asked him what his security clearance was, then told him he didn’t have a high enough clearance to read them.
Yes, I had a security clearance in High School, and access to the the Restricted library on the nearby military base.

Caulfield makes a better teacher than she does. And as a side note, I think you can use ‘wikipedia’ in the comics page instead of a pseudonym. I don’t think it’s trademarked or anything…

Caulfield’s kind don’t really care about reducing the AMOUNT of work. Their true pursuit is to craft something worthy of that time and effort. Such a person will gladly spend ten times more than what is required if they can convert an inane task into something meaningful.
