@crweaver:Someone beat you to it. There is an old sci fi movie from the 50’s called THEM where some nuclear blast or something went wrong and the spiders grew to giant proportions.

There was a memorable Gahan Wilson cartoon in the New Yorker in the 60’s I believe, showing a group of insects holding a meeting in a leafy glade, with one of them on a sort of podium, and the caption something like “Assuming that one day bugs will take over the world, the question is, which bugs?” Of course insects already rule the world, as far as numbers go, by far. As for competing for control with humans, they don’t have to eliminate us (though they do contribute by spreading disease, etc.), but only wait for us to destroy ourselves. It has been said that the cockroach has amazing survival capability, and after a nuclear war would do just fine.

They already do rule the world, insectophobes. Number of species, number of individuals, sheer biomass — measure it anyway you like, the bugs are the dominant life form on this planet, have been for millions of years before we showed up, and will be for millions of years after we’ve Moved On.

Actually, insects will outlive us—after we blow ourselves up in a nuclear war.

There was a made-for-tv movie about locusts, as I recall. But I think ruling the world is more than just having the highest population or the highest biomass.
