Its amazing that 14 years after the death of Reg Smythe that the Andy Capp column continues today. I found an old Andy cartoon book from the sixties and the differences between the Andy of 1968 and 2012 are quite amazing.
Almost everone has had something bad in their life that can relate to a comic strip. I never associate the two and get depressed about it. It is just a comic strip and the best medicine is to laugh.
Another big difference between this and the old Reg Smythe Andy is that Reg NEVER did story arcs. Every one of his Andy Capp cartoons was a stand alone strip.
Right now, it’s funny because of the novelty…we’ve never seen Andy like this before. But eventually, that’s going to wear off.
It’s a sad sad day indeed when the PCP (Politically Correct Police) get hold of Andy Capp. You’ve gotten rid of the things that made Andy funny, next thing we know he’ll get a job or join some hippy green organisation and make the strip totally pointless!
For humor to work there needs to be some sort of incongruity. One way is to act inconsistently with established societal norms. That is part of the essence of Andy Capp. A master can push this to an almost uncomfortable limit and reel it in at the last second playing on the intellect and leaving the emotions still intact. He never quite crosses the boundary of offensiveness but can make you wonder if he did.

i disagree. I just think the writers wanted to keep the strip fresh for a little while. He’ll be back drinking in no time
