D.A. — I don’t think he lied at all. The phrase “helped a bit” is intentionally vague. … not John’s fault if the boys read more into it than was there. It is what Dads do to help build self confidence in the children. Seems like you’re living up to your namesake again…..
I took my son kart racing when he was 11. Gas engine karts not soap box derby. The understanding was the same as when we raced the R/C cars. I put up the bank roll but he did all the work (with supervision of course). It was always amusing at the track when other Dad’s would come over and ask a question on setup and I’d refer them to my son. He did his own setup and I think that had much to do with his success. Today he restores/prepares vintage race cars as a profession.
Very sweet of John to down-play his role in the building of that go-kart so that Michael could take all the credit and look good in front of his friends. He definitely loves his son.
Having said that though . . . I feel very conflicted regarding the idea of Michael telling his friends one WHOPPER of a lie and then John backing him up. I don’t think that sets a very good example for his son, who should be taught that it’s always better to tell the truth — no matter what.
Allowing Michael to take the credit in front of his peers and realizing the respect gotten for a job well done will change Michael’s mind about these projects. That lie will give him the push he needs to be a man. Would that all fathers could do so for their children – sadly, many fathers did not have the experience to do so for their children and it just gets worse.

Genius Kit, Pinewood Derby…my dad did all of that FOR me. Yeah, I got to take credit for it, but I rarely did any of the work. :(
