You’re all so naive. He’s obviously scouting locations for dumping bodies.

In the old days in the UK it was known as “committing a public nuisance” and carried a hefty fine.

Unfortunately, he was caught on canvas and fined. This is why the painting can be found in fine arts.

After paddling clear across the lake, Mr. Homer realizes that he forgot to load his fishing gear.

Enlarged (different coloration) available from here. You can enlarge the (another coloration) image in this article by clicking the image and then green spyglass here. According to this, 1870 is part of the title, which this says is the first year the artist visited the area. So far, only (good enlargement of that coloration by clicking image there) work by this artist to appear in Mr. Melcher’s blog.

That caption ruined the mood of the painting. One of my LR murals was based on a Homer painting with ships. I played the song Ebbtide as I painted it (about 20’ long x 8’ tall)..Thanks, Mabrndt, one of your links led me to this good article on Melcher in LA Times with 2 of the paintings I don’t remember seeing yet. http://tinyurl.com/yzq3kke
