Wow, this was a debut comic? Sad. Really sad. Well, I hope you like the sound of crickets cause (1) this was NOT funny and therefore gives me no incentive to come back (2) no one’s gonna want to read a COMIC that is no funny cause comics are supposed to be funny. Thus why some people call them “the funnies”. Seriously, how could you think a plain, boring dictionary entry would be funny!? Well, hope you enjoy your… week maybe if you’re lucky, of having this strip up!
For years, my daughter had a huge towel with that famous “♪ Love to eat them mousies . . .” cat-guitar-playing cartoon on it. It hung in the dank five-car junker pit. It probably died of old age.
I love it! If the man keeps talking, maybe the cats wlll keep listening … or maybe not! My favorite Kliban image — cat prancing on hind feet, holding a rat in its mouth — has the caption: EAT A RAT & DO THE HOOCHIE KOO.
The only reason I’m reading this is that I had bedsheets with this cat on them from when I was 4 to 8 and always wondered the story was to this cartoon!
my favorite, a notecard with kliban cat staring at a large pizza, and inside it says, “pizza on earth.”i am a believer. thanks for bringing kliban cats back to me
what i don’t understand is why some people must vent nastiness at a cartoon that they don’t like before leaving. its all a mater of personal preference. if you don’t like it, don’t come here and tell me that you don’t like it. i don’t want to hear it. just turn your back and walk away. thank you.
So glad to see this classic back in the public eye. I fear it may be too subtle for the younger reader who has to be hit over the head with a funny stick to discern humor. Please keep it up!
For those of us older than 12, Kliban’s work is indeed classic. From his cats to his somewhat risque Playboy cartoons Kliban covered a lot of ground. However like most things in life nothing suits everybody. Some people love Dali, some people love Rembrandt. It’s not who you love, but that you love.
Yay! After a rough day at work, what a treat to come home (to a hotel!) and find an e-mail pointing me to Kliban’s Cats! I can’t help but to smile, smile, smile!
This is not new. I remember it from back in the 70’s or 80’s. I believe definition #2 is “one hell of a nice creature who looks like a meat loaf”, or something like that.
Miba. You think the cartoons and “comics” should only be “funny”? Many of them really make you think, and all the Cat cartoons: Kilban’s Cats, 10 Cats, Fat Cats, Garfield, Kit & Carlyle are not only “funny” but for the most part true to life and make you think outside the box – (The litter box. (LOL)
Kliban seems, to many, a bit “unfunny”. That’s because his work was ripped off by many of today’s comics, who learned a lot from him, and used up all his bits. Plus, he died a while back and can’t defend himself or come up with new material. The uninitiated can never fully appreciate what a pioneer he was.
I love the Kliban cats. I had a set of coasters (unfortunately lost several during my last move) and mugs. Favourites were “cat wants”. Cat on one side of screen door: Cat wants out. Next panel: Cat wants in.
Kliban was obviously owned by felines. (“Cat wants people food”)
I still use my Red Sneakered Cat note pad(or at least my husband does) AND we still have the complete 4 poster series comprising this cartoon, the blues singing cat, high class cat and Momcat.
What confuses me about the reactions of some of the readers on GoComics is that they seem to think that comics have to be one specific way, and MUST appeal to them directly. If not, they will loudly proclaim their displeasure and HUFF out. Why? (and who do they think cares if they stick around?) Not all comics HAVE to be ha-ha laugh out funny. Kliban was never about hilarity. His is an acquired taste that’s more conceptual than straight-out amusing. As mentioned in the introduction for the other Kliban strip, he’s the one that influenced Gary Larson’s FarSide. That’s got to mean something in its own right.
Every morning I drink tea from my Kliban mug that must be about 30 years old. Seeing this strip makes me feel young again. Welcome back, Kliban’s Cats!
I always like the one with the cat staring at his “owner” and the caption said, “Cats can see things we can’t”. Not a pet for the paranoid. I’ve got three.

Sorry Miba. Guess it’s too subtle for you. Or maybe you’re just too young. Perhaps you should read the bio to the side.

This is a wonderful classic! Sit back and learn about cats. Cats have a wonderful sense of humor, very twisted…in a good way.
Wait until the red tennis shoes and “Love to eat them mousies.Mousies what I love to eat. Bite they little tails off. Nibble on they tiny feet!”
