I bought a cactus once and everyone told me not to give it too much water. So I didn’t. Turns out that you have to water those things every year like clockwork. On the other hand, a dead cactus looks much like a live cactus… may need a little green spray paint somewhere around the second year, but it continues to serve the purpose.
Back in the day, when native Arizonan Hugh Downs was working on the Today Show in New York, he’d get a cactus to remind him of home, and within days he’d drown it. Somewhere along the line he got the brilliant idea to subscribe to a hometown newspaper and have it send to his office at NBC. From that, he’d only water the cactus when the paper said it rained back home. Never had another problem with a cactus after that.
