Looks familiar. I just gave up and now refer to them as Squirrel feeders.

The songbirds should hire a raven to drive off intruders. Or an owl to eat them.

Those feeders are “for the birds”!

You can get squirrel-proof bird feeders, you know!

Mine looked just like this. It’s made by Droll Yankee. It has a motor in it, so that if a heavy animal sits on the rail, the platform starts to spin rapidly. It’s hilarious to watch the squirrels go flying off. But then, they learned to slide down the tube and jam themselves between the rail and the tube. The motor turned on, but couldn’t spin the jammed platform. Then the battery would just run down. There’s a lot going on in those peanut-sized brains, I’m telling you.

I still use it, because it’s a good feeder, but the squirrels still get more seeds than the birds.

Buy the ones with the cages around them Rose – they really do keep the squirrels out. We now enjoy happy birds from our dining room windows, while the squirrels go elsewhere for their breakfast!

I know the poor little squirrels need to eat also, but the birds should get the seeds intended for them.

I put a bowl of “wildlife food” on the porch for the squirrels and a feeder in the tree for the birds. I came home from work one day to see the birds sitting in the bowl on the porch eating the food while the squirrel was hanging upside down from the tree eating from the feeder. It was pretty funny.

I now put the best food right near my patio doors so we can chase off the pigeons and feral cats. I love to see birds eating in all their different ways.

Seeing as I’ve seen a series of photos of a bear walking a clothesline like a tightrope to reach a bird feeder in the middle, I’d say it’s tough to thwart any determined critter.

Used to like to watch a squirrel launch itself at some friends’ bird feeder from their’ roof. Had the trajectory down pat. Another favorite was at park in Homosassa Springs, FL. We would stand on a bridge and watch the handler feed alfalfa sprouts to the manatees. An enterprising squirrel would hang from the bridge by its hind feet and scoop up the alfalfa from its water with its paws. That was one fat squirrel!

Did you read my comment just below Nubulous’s? They work until the squirrels figure out how to hold on to the tube and not sit on the platform. In my case, they actually ran the battery down when they kept jamming themselves in between the tube and the cage.

I put up a feeder holder that had a squirrel baffle on it. It worked real well, until the squirrel figured out that it could climb up the screen on my front window and jump across to the feeder.

Squirrels need to eat too…..if you put food where a squirrel can get to it, he will eat it. That’s what any animal does to survive. Why is it that birds are worthy of being fed, but squirrels are not?

Shooter 918: Squirrels store food – and forget where they stored it. Most of my oaks and some of my pecans were planted by them that way. Birds just leave if there is no food.

I gave my mother a huge squirt gun. She could shoot thru the screen of the open window and hit the squirrel on the bird feeder. It was funny to watch the squirrel drop to the ground and take off.
