When I was very small, I remember being sat on a giant tortoise for a photo opportunity. I guess that was the last of the medieval behaviors our zoos allowed… the list of proscribed behaviors started with bear baiting and ended during my childhood with those tortoise opportunities. Actually, come to think of it, I think I’ve heard our local zoo STARTED as a bear baiting opportunity.
When I was little … we used to go to Story Book Gardens, in London, Canada … there were (when I was young) Peacocks that would roam free but nothing else. See this funny video:http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/on-line-exhibits/cfpl/videos/1958/8.aspx
Greg, we did that too, only I wouldn’t sit on the turtle. I just kinda leaned up on it. Not sure if I felt bad for the tortoise or was scared of it. Probably a little of both!
The zoo here used to have peacocks roaming free, too. They quit when a kid got pecked, I heard. That was a long time ago. These days, the poor birds would probably be the ones to get injured. And the zoo would be sued. And all that comes with that. Euccch.
I was about 12 when, on a visit to the zoo featured in “Any Which Way You Can”, two of the giraffes were in the process of making a baby. My mother turned beet red, my younger brothers had no idea what was going on. That was a very prolific herd of giraffes, with at least one baby born every year.
Way back in the 60’s, my three year old sister figured out that if you annoy the peacocks, they fan out their tails. When one hissed at The Brat, Mom told me to “go get the baby.”
Oh, no. I have lived to this century because I DO NOT mess with things bigger and meaner than I am. The Brat, on the other hand, has lived to this century because no matter how big it is, NOTHING is meaner than she is. It’s really fun to sic her on Insurance Claims adjusters.

Eddie’s next question. If I can’t play with the animals, why did we come to the zoo?

A friend went to South Africa a couple of years ago – she got to ride an ostrich! If Eddie can’t ride the giraffes, can he ride an ostrich?
